The Karnataka State Assembly gave nod to the bill which will reserve 25 percent of seats for local students in the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore.

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly has passed a bill that will now give 25 percent of seats to the state students in the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore.

As per the bill, any individual who has done their studies in the state for 10 years will be eligible to apply for a 25 percent reservation quota in order to seek admission in NLSIU for the law degree. NLSIU has 80 seats for undergraduate and 50 for postgraduate.

Till now, all seats at NLSIU were filled based on the ranking secured by an aspirant in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). CLAT is conducted to provide admission to the students in different undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered at various National Law Universities (NLU) across the country.

If the National Law School of India (Amendment) Bill 2020 becomes law then it will replace the National Law School of India Act, 1986. The bill which has been passed by the state Assembly now needs to be passed by the Legislative Council too before it is being presented to the Governor of the state Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala for approval.

The National Law School of India (Amendment) Bill 2020, was tabled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which passed without any opposition within the minutes of it being tabled.

However, former law and parliamentary affairs minister Krishna Byregowda asked the government to replace the term ‘Kannadiga Students’ with ‘Students of Karnataka’ in the bill. He said, if it is not replaced, even the students who are not from the state but have completed 10 years of education in Karanataka will avail this benefit which in-turn will be wrong for those who are born and brought up in the state.

In 2017, the government had made a proposal of providing a 50 percent reservation for the Karnataka students in NLSIU Bangalore which was later rejected by the Governor. However, most of the NLUs in the country does give reservations to the local students.
