NIT Trichy student declared winner of IET India Scholarship Awards 2021

Dhivakar Kumararaja Malarvizhi, a student of electronics engineering, will receive INR 1.2 lakh, whereas Amrita Kesh from IIEST Shibpur became the first runner-up and will receive INR 80,000. 

A fourth-year engineering student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Trichy, has won the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) India National Scholarship Awards 2021. The awards were announced on the occasion of National Science Day. 

Dhivakar Kumararaja Malarvizhi, a student of electronics engineering at the institute, will receive a cash prize of INR 1.2 lakh. Amrita Kesh from the Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology (IIEST) Shibpur became the first runner-up and won a scholarship prize money of INR 80,000, whereas Akshata Patil from Fr C Rodrigues Institute of Technology was declared the second runner-up and won a cash prize of INR 60,000. 

Winner proposed solution to marine disaster

Malarvizhi proposed a unique solution to avert a potential marine disaster that non-biodegradable waste from the pandemic could contribute to. Ujani Ghosh, who heads the scholarship programme for India, said, “The winner has displayed technical expertise, leadership potential as well as convincingly presented his ideas to the jury. We congratulate him on his victory. It is an exemplary achievement and to be able to present his idea to a high-profile national jury is a success in itself.”  

Four-phase online assessment 

The finalists competed against more than 1,400 students in a four-phase online assessment that tested their STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fundamentals. Shortlisted candidates were asked to present innovative engineering solutions to key societal challenges outlined by the Scholarship Advisory Committee during the regional round. 

This year’s topics included the use of futuristic technologies to address waste generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of safe and dependable public transportation for a post-pandemic world and the use of technology to combat fake news infodemic.
