University of Manchester president will visit India to explore collaboration in education and innovation. He will launch a new joint doctoral degree course with IISc Bangalore. The agreement will see mobility of students between Bengaluru & Manchester.

The University of Manchester is partnering with several Indian institutes, medical research centres and corporates to boost initiatives to find solutions to global problems. University of Manchester president Dame Nancy Rothwell, along with a senior delegation of the university, will visit India to explore collaboration in education, research and innovation.
The delegation will visit the Tata Medical Centre in Kolkata, which along with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, will initiate work for the development of cancer research and treatment in India. In Bengaluru, the delegation will visit the National Centre for Biological Sciences to build on links in areas such as stem cell research. Here, the delegation will also explore new areas of collaboration, including infectious disease and vaccine development.

Prof Rothwell will launch a new joint doctoral degree programme with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. The agreement will see the mobility of students between Bengaluru and Manchester. This will be a crucial vehicle to cement the ties between the two institutions, with the potential to increase funding and impact on both sides.

The group will also collaborate with Tata Group and Reliance Industries to explore new areas of translational research, drawing on Manchester’s key strengths in 2D materials, including graphene, industrial biotechnology, clean energy and environmental science. The aim of these initiatives is to promote sustainability.

Prof Rothwell said, “I am particularly pleased to launch a new joint PhD programme with IISc Bangalore, the first of its kind with a UK institution. This agreement will allow for our academic links to grow a long-term partnership, a key component of which will be the development of new technologies for industrial development in the UK and India.”
