Miranda House Sexual Harassment Row: Amid the fests and joyous celebrations happening in many of the Delhi University colleges, multiple videos of men climbing gates and walls of Miranda House colleges are going viral on social media.
With the video of male students gatecrashing the women’s college, reports of multiple students of Miranda House complaining of incidents of catcalling, groping and other forms of sexual harassment started rising. Reports suggest that the incident took place on October 14, 2022 during the Diwali fest of the college – Onella 2022.
Social media is flooded with complaints of their experiences of the fest and alleged “Cat-calling, groping, sexist sloganeering and more”. Earlier, police officials stated that those who were forcefully trying to enter the campus were stopped and the fest remained ‘incident-free’.
However, after the videos went viral on Twitter, police have taken a suo moto cognizance and filed an FIR regarding the incident. Delhi Commission for Women also issued a notice to the police after the videos went viral.
Students have alleged that the male students allegedly belonged to Ramjas College, DU. Miranda House students shared videos of men from Ramjas College roaming around campus “with their sexist slogan, “Ramjas ka Naara hai, Miranda poora hamara hai”. (Ramjas’s slogan, all of Miranda is ours).
“Attendees (mostly men) also chanted slogans and demanded to be let in. Some shouted out undignified assertions where they saw women as objects to be conquered. That, accompanied by the horrifying visuals of men climbing over gates and wall, trying (and succeeding) to enter college premises, made students feel unsafe and stifled on their campus," read the statement issued by Miranda’s students society.
As per a statement issued by the NSS Unit of Miranda House, the CCTV footage is being assessed to identify the miscreants. “On a broader level beyond Miranda House, there is a need for greater sensitisation of men and boys in colleges and universities,” the statement read further.
