NDA Exam Pattern for Mathematics

The Mathematics section of NDA carries a total of 120 objective-type multiple-choice questions. The total marks allotted to this section are 300. Candidates get two hours and 30 minutes to solve the question paper. For the correct answer, candidates score 2.5 marks while 0.83 marks are deducted for wrong answers.

Is NCERT Enough for NDA Maths?

NDA exam for Maths consists of questions that are of high school and secondary school level. Candidates need to follow the NCERT books thoroughly to understand all the concepts.

NDA Mathematics Syllabus

NDA syllabus comprises topics from Algebra, Matrices and Determinants, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry of two and three dimensions, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus and Differential Equations, Vector Algebra and Statistics and Probability. The detailed syllabus for Maths paper is given below:

Q:   What is good score in NDA exam?

A:

The NDA written exam marks will be 900 and NDA SSB marks will be 900. So Final total marks will be 900+900 = 1800 marks. NDA considers a score between 400 and 500 marks to be a secure range and get into the final merit list. Candidates need to pass each subject with a minimum of 25% marks. However, there is no sectional cut-off. The cutoff for the written exam is cumulative of marks of both the subjects (Mathematics and General Ability Test). 

Q:   Is the NDA exam MCQ type?

A:

According to the NDA Exam Pattern, the NDA Exam will be conducted in offline mode, and all questions will be MCQ type. The exam is given in both English and Hindi. The question paper will consist of two sections: Mathematics and GAT. The total marks allotted to the written exam are 900. Candidates qualifying the written exam are called for SSB interview. The SSB Interview carries 900 marks.

Q:   Is NDA easy or tough?

A:
NDA exam is not tough to crack. It depends on the level of exam preparation and understanding of the candidate. To ace the exam, candidates must go through the syllabus and exam pattern. They should solve the previous years question papers and mock tests. Candidates must prepare a study routine for the exam and follow it dilligently. Candidates must also analyse their preparation and work on improving the weak areas.

Q:   Can I crack NDA through self-study?

A:
There are many students who have cracked NDA exam with self-study. Replying only to coaching will not help in cracking the exam. Candidates should be consistent with their NDA preparation. The first and foremost step towards preparation should be going through the syllabus and exam pattern. Candidates must also solve previous years' question papers. By solving the previous years' question papers, candidates can know the type of questions asked in the exam.

Calculus

Concept of a real-valued function, domain, range and graph of a function. Composite functions, one-to-one, onto and inverse functions. Notion of limit, Standard limits, Continuity of functions, algebraic operations on continuous functions. Derivative of function at a point, geometrical and physical interpretation of a derivative application. Derivatives of sum, product and quotient of functions, derivative of a function with respect to another function, derivative of a composite function. Second-order derivatives. Increasing and decreasing functions. Application of derivatives in problems of maxima and minima

Matrices and Determinants

Types of matrices, operations on matrices. Determinant of a matrix, basic properties of determinants. Adjoint and inverse of a square matrix, Applications-Solution of a system of linear equations in two or three unknowns by Cramer’s rule and by Matrix Method.

Integral Calculus and Differential Equations

Integration as inverse of differentiation, integration by substitution and by parts, standard integrals involving algebraic expressions, trigonometric, exponential and hyperbolic functions. Evaluation of definite integrals—determination of areas of plane regions bounded by curves-applications.

Definition of order and degree of a differential equation, formation of a differential equation by examples. General and particular solutions of differential equations, solutions of the first order and first-degree differential equations of various types-examples. Application in problems of growth and decay.

Trigonometry

Angles and their measures in degrees and in radians. Trigonometric ratios. Trigonometric identities Sum and difference formulae. Multiple and Sub-multiple angles. Inverse trigonometric functions. Applications-Height and distance, properties of triangles.

Vector Algebra

Vectors in two and three dimensions, magnitude, and direction of vector. Unit and null vectors, the addition of vectors, scalar multiplication of a vector, scalar product, or dot product of two vectors. Vector product or cross product of two vectors. Applications—work done by a force and moment of a force and in geometrical problems.

Analytical Geometry Of Two and Three Dimension

Rectangular Cartesian Coordinate system. Distance formula. Equation of a line in various forms. The angle between two lines. Distance of a point from a line. Equation of a circle in standard and a general form. Standard forms of parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola. Eccentricity and axis of a conic. Point in a three-dimensional space, the distance between two points. Direction Cosines and direction ratios. Equation two points. Direction Cosines and direction ratios. Equation of a plane and a line in various forms. Angle between two lines and angle between two planes. Equation of a sphere.

Statistics and Probability

Probability: Random experiment, outcomes, and associated sample space, events, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, impossible and certain events. Union and Intersection of events. Complementary, elementary, and composite events. Definition of probability—classical and statistical—examples. Elementary theorems on probability-simple problems. Conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem—simple problems. Random variable as function on a sample space. Binomial distribution, examples of random experiments giving rise to Binomial distribution.

How to Prepare for NDA Mathematics?

Follow the tips and tricks below for the Mathematics section:

  • Candidates must have a clear understanding of the NDA syllabus and mark the important topics after analyzing the previous years’ question papers.
  • Start preparing the important topics first, and at the same time, delegate time for the difficult topics.
  • Solve mock tests to decide how much time to dedicate to each type of question. Also, candidates must solve the previous year's question papers to get an idea about the type of questions asked in the exam.
  • Candidates must learn tips, tricks and shortcuts for efficient time management.
  • Memorise simple calculations such as squares and cubes.
  • Make notes of shortcuts and formulas to refer to during last-minute revision.
  • As there is a negative marking in the exam, they should mark the answer only if they are sure about it. Do not guess the answers during the exam.
  • Candidates must refer to good Mathematics books for NDA preparation
  • During the final phase of preparation, devote at least three hours for going through the formula.
  • Do not get confused while converting the numbers from decimal to a binary system.

YES, Humanities student can definately clear the NDA exam. If one wants to clear NDA in first attempt being a humanities student then they had to work really hard as competitors are mainly from Science stream.
