School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) Delhi offers full-time and part-time PhD courses. The doctoral-level courses are offered in the fields of Urban Planning, Architecture, Industrial Design, Landscape Architecture, etc. Candidates must finish their full-time PhD programme within a duration of five years, while in the case of Part-time, the maximum duration is seven years from the date of registration. Candidates can submit their thesis after two-year or within five years from the date of registration. During a PhD programme at SPA Delhi, students need to work on doctoral research work in the first three semesters. Admission to the doctoral level courses is based on the fulfilment of the eligibility conditions.

The students pursuing PhD full-time must meet the residency requirements apart from teaching the postgraduate students for 8-10 hours/week. However, both full-time and part-time aspirants are required to attend the Research Methodology course. For PhD (Part-Time), the eligibility criteria will be the same as above except that the applicant should have an additional work experience of five years over the one specified above and should obtain a letter of consent from the employer if any.
