Review of School of Science and Humanities, SRM IST, Chennai.
Placements: Aside from routine campus placements, our department has taken 2 main initiatives to boost placements and portfolios.
1. Alumni meets: every month an alumni from our department visits us and gives us a lecture on what they do as well as the state of the current job market. Since journalism and mass communication are courses with such a broad scope, each alumni comes from a different industry, for example, corporate (PR, branding, marketing, etc. ), or media (filming, advertisements, etc.). Publishing (books, firms, etc.). Content (writing, editing, freelance, etc.).
2. Mandatory Internship from Year 1: It is mandatory to get an internship in your first year. The faculty is well connected and will help place you in case you need assistance. In addition to this, the department also gives you extensive and practical projects that can be added to your resume to enhance it.
Infrastructure: The department has a smart class where seminars or interactive classes take place. We also have a hall where movie streaming, conferences and big lectures take place. In addition to this, we also have a lab that is accessible to us at any point in time to work on projects. This lab is equipped with computers and air conditioning with basic software. We also have a visual studio and a lab where you can learn how to film and edit video. These labs are equipped with more advanced software.
Faculty: The department has a small faculty, which is great because it significantly increases the quality of student - teacher relationships, making the classes extremely approachable. The curriculum is well thought out, with 3 types of papers
1. Theory: deals with theory subjects alone, research and material-based.
2. Practical: deals with experiments and practical learning; mostly assignment-based, no theory component; or written examinations.
3. Joint papers: a combination of theory and practical learning.
Other: The best part about this course is that it is an umbrella course; it covers a broad range of fields, thus exponentially increasing exposure.
1. Journalism: content writing, media law and ethics, news paper writing, etc.
2. Corporate: public relations, marketing, branding, advertising, etc.
3. Social Media: management, analysis, creative branding, etc.
