Some Historical Facts About Allahabad University:

Allahabad University was established on the 23rd September 1887, Sir William Muir who was Lt. governor of the United Provinces conceived the idea of a Central College in Allahabad and as a result of his efforts, the Foundation stone of Muir Central College was laid on December 9th in 1873. Muir College, named after Lt. Sir William Muir, only eventually developed into a University and became known as Allahabad University. Initially, Muir Central College came under the University of Calcutta but later with the passing of an Act Allahabad University was established.
It started as a degree-conferring institution, in 1904 Indian Universities Act was passed with which Its territorial Jurisdiction was limited to provinces of the United provinces of Awadh and Agra, The Central provinces and most of the states of Rajputana and central Indian agencies. 38 institutions of these areas were affiliated to Allahabad University between 1887 and 1927. In 1921 Muir College lost its independent existence and merged with Allahabad University with the implementation of the University of Allahabad Act.
University started establishing its own teaching departments and doctoral research programs from 1904 onwards, Senate -hall was opened in 1912. In 1951 it recognized some local institutions as associated colleges where some undergraduate courses were taught. In 1992 state government accorded recognition to the Premier institution and in 2003 Union Cabinet decided to Restore central university status which was accorded in 2005 through The University of Allahabad Act by the parliament of India.
