Hostel Facilities at Jadavpur University

The hostel mess at Jadavpur University is managed by the Students Mess Committee, under the guidance of the superintendent of the respective hostel.

Jadavpur University Kolkata provides hostel facilities for its students. There are a total of 13 hostels (9 for boys and 4 for girls) with a provision for accommodating more than 1,600 students.

Jadavpur University Kolkata Dormitory

The university is currently making efforts to extend the existing hostel buildings and construct new dormitories for accommodating more students. A mess facility is available for students staying in the hostels. The hostel mess is managed by the Students Mess Committee, under the guidance of the superintendent of the respective hostel.

The main hostel building at Jadavpur University is situated outside the campus of Jadavpur University, Kolkata. There are private canteens supervised by the Students Committee at the complex of main hostel complex, at the ladies' hostel complex and beside the old PG Hostel. For research scholars, there is an exclusive hostel.

Enrolment Process for Hostels at Jadavpur University 

Students who require accommodation in the hostel are required to collect a prescribed application form from the Information Office of the University. The duly filled-in form needs to be submitted to the Office of the Dean of Students. The hostel form can also be downloaded at downloads under the admission menu on the official website of Jadavpur University, Kolkata.

The registration process for the hostel facility at Jadavpur University is quite rigorous. Not every student applying for the hostel facility gets the opportunity to stay in the hostel. Only students with a valid reason for staying at the hostel are accommodated. Students applying for hostel facilities should have their home at least at a good distance from the University. Rooms at the hostel are also allotted based on the family income of the students and economically backward students are given a preference at every hostel. The application form for the hostels opens for admission for a short time only and closes within a few days.

Hostel Fees and Other Charges

At the time of admission to the hostel, students are required to pay INR 3,000, which is inclusive of mess fees in advance. There is no Caution Deposit taken from the students for the hostel accommodation. In addition to this fee, students have to pay monthly seat rent and electricity charges at the rate of INR 15 and INR 10 respectively. Research Scholar (RS) and M.Phil students need to pay the monthly seat rent which includes electricity charges of INR 300 and INR 150 respectively.

Hostel Mess Facilities

Charges for two major meals vary across different hostels but it is generally INR 1,500 per month. Students are required to pay for every mess meal according to the bill generated by the Student Mess Committee. In case of a default in payment of mess dues, seat rent or electricity charges, the boarding facility of a student at the hostel may be cancelled. 

The meals at the hostel mess are quite good in terms of taste, prepared with hygiene and are sufficient in quantity. The menu for the mess is not fixed in the hostel and varies from time to time every month. Both veg and non-veg meals are served at the mess.

Amenities at Jadavpur University Hostel

The hostel facility is cheap but good at Jadavpur University. The hostel rooms and common area of the building are well-maintained and kept clean. The rooms in the hostels are spacious and 2-3 students stay in one room. Single rooms are available at the Salt Lake Campus Hostel. 

The hostel LAN facility is available to students every day between 8 and 9 PM and on Sundays, it is available for the full day. Dum Dum Metro station is the closest metro station to the Salt Lake Campus. Students can avail of the local bus service or the auto service for travel. Sulekha Bus Stand is close to the Jadavpur University Campus.

It is not mandatory for students to opt for the hostel facility. They can choose to stay anywhere outside the campus or at their home if it is nearby. They can also stay in any other hostel or PG facility other than the college hostel. 

Students staying at the hostel must follow the rules. Students are expected to maintain decorum in the hostels at all times. Smoking and drinking are prohibited at the hostels.
