NIRF Rankings 2020 has been released for ten categories - Overall rankings, University, Engineering, College, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture, and Medical. This is the first time that the ranking is released for the Dental category. Check top-ranked institutions in each category below. 

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) released the NIRF Indian Ranking 2020 today, i.e. June 11. As per the NIRF Indian Ranking 2020, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras,  ranks 1 in the Overall category followed by the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISc Bangalore) and IIT Delhi.

The top three rankers in University category of National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking include IISc Bangalore, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), respectively.

In Engineering category, the top three rankers are IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, and IIT Bombay, respectively. Institutions that have been ranked the best in College category include Miranda House (Rank 1), Lady Shri Ram College of Women, New Delhi, and Hindu College (Rank 3) of Delhi University.   

On the other hand, the top ManagementMBA colleges in India as per NIRF Ranking 2020 include IIM Ahmedabad (Rank 1), Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) (Rank 2) and IIM Calcutta (Rank 3).

Jamia HamdardPanjab University, and National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research have been ranked as the top three universities in Pharmacy category of MHRD-NIRF Ranking 2020.

In Medical category, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, and Christian Medical College, Bengaluru have been ranked as the top three institutions.

Candidates aspiring to pursue Law can seek admission in the top three NIRF ranked Law institutions - National Law School of India University Bangalore (NLSIU Bangalore), National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi) and Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad.

In Architecture category, IIT KharagpurIIT Roorkee and National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut) have been ranked as the top three institutes.  

Along with the Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nikshank,  Minister of State Sanjay Dhotre presented the NIRF Indian Ranking 2020 through a webinar or digital conference.

This is the first NIRF ranking announced under the leadership of HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal. The first-ever rankings were announced by Smriti Irani.

NIRF is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in 2015, to rank institutions of higher education in India. This year the NIRF Ranking 2020 was delayed due to coronavirus crisis. In 2019, the MHRD had announced the ranks on April 8.

NIRF India rankings 2020 were released in ten categories - Overall rankings, University, Engineering, College, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture, and Medical. This is the first time that the ranking will be released for the Dental category too. The number of institutes that participated in the rankings has increased by 20 per cent this year. This year, about 3,800 institutes applied for the rankings. Also, the first year for ranking of Dental institutes.

In 2019, President Ram Nath Kovind during the launch of the NIRF ranking said that the enrolment of girls in the higher education systems in the country is relatively low and an area of concern.

NIRF rankings are awarded based on the following parameters - Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.

With each passing year, the number of institutes participating in NIRF rankings has increased and so has the categories in which institutes are ranked. In 2016, the institutes were ranked in only four categories which increased to nine in 2019.

In 2019, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras was named as the best institute overall. IISc Bangalore retained its spot as the best University. Miranda House was named as the best college in the country. IIT Madras was the best engineering institute and IIM Bangalore was the best institute in the Management category.

Jamia Hamdard University was the best Pharmacy institute, AIIMS Delhi was the best medical institute, NLSIU Bengaluru was the best law institute, and IIT Kharagpur was the best in the Architecture category.
