Q:   What is JoSAA?

A:

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) has been set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to manage and regulate joint seat allocation for admissions to over 100 institutes including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs). Admissions to all these institutes will be done through a single platform. The idea behind introducing a single counselling platform was to reduce thousands of seats going vacant in engineering colleges across the country. The Joint seat allocation process was introduced to make the whole process of admissions smoother, effective, efficient, transparent and a lot faster. Candidates who qualify for the JEE Main or JEE Advanced must register for JoSAA 2025 to participate in the counselling and admission process for various renowned engineering institutes across India. The admission process for admissions in 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 25 IIITs, and 28 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs) is managed by The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Candidates will be allotted seats in various rounds of JoSAA counselling. The seat allotment through JoSAA will be based on the merit of candidates and their preference for courses and colleges.

What is JoSAA Counselling?

The JoSAA counselling process facilitates the allocation of seats for undergraduate engineering programs at various prestigious institutions such as IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs. While admission to IITs is based on JEE Advanced ranks, seats in other participating colleges are allotted based on JEE Main ranks. The Ministry of Education has established the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) to oversee the allocation process for a total of 121 institutes, including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 40 Other-GFTIs. Eligible candidates are required to register through the official JoSAA online portal to participate in the counselling and secure a seat in any of the aforementioned institutes.

Q:   Can I get NIT with 95 percentile in JEE Main?

A:
It is possible for you to secure a seat in an NIT (National Institute of Technology), although it may not guarantee your preferred branch or institute. If your percentile is above 96%, your chances of getting into a respectable NIT increase, but you may need to compromise on your branch selection. However, if you aim for a decent NIT with a preferred branch in the core field, you would need to score above 97.5%. On the other hand, if your goal is to get admission to a top college with the CSE (Computer Science and Engineering) branch, your score would need to be higher than 99.4%.

However, via JoSAA seat are allotted to all available seats in IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs. But via CSAB seat is allotted only at NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs against the vacant seats left after JoSAA counselling last round based on JEE Main scores.

    JoSAA 2025 Seat Allotment

JoSAA will announce the seat allotment result under the respective JoSAA login of the candidates. Candidates can login with their JEE Main 2025 application number and JoSAA 2025 password to check their allotment. The candidates are allotted seats based on their JEE Main/Advanced ranks, categories and choices filled.

A candidate who has been allocated a seat needs to download the “Initial Seat Allotment Intimation Slip” which has information regarding the allotted seat. It is the candidate’s responsibility to login to the JoSAA portal and check if a seat is allocated in a given round of seat allocation. No separate intimation of seat allocation will be given to the candidate.

Q:   How can I keep my currently allocated seat and opt out of further rounds of JoSAA counselling?

    A:

If you are satisfied with the allotted seat and do not wish to participate in further rounds of JoSAA seat allocation, you need to choose the option “Freeze” while accepting the seat and complete all the three steps of online reporting process.

Thumbs Up IconUpvote Thumbs Down Icon

Q:   Do I need to take any action in the current JoSAA round if I want to reject my allocated seat and wait for better options in later rounds?

    A:

If you are allocated a seat in a certain round of JoSAA, you need to follow steps for online reporting that include

    • acceptance of the seat
    • uploading of documents and
    • payment of seat acceptance fee

You need to accept the seat and choose an option of Float/Slide if you wish to be considered for a seat of higher preference in any Institute/within the allocated Institute in the subsequent rounds (other than the last round). If you fail to complete any of the three steps of online reporting for seat acceptance, your allocated seat will be CANCELLED, and you will no longer be able to participate in the seat allocation process.

Thumbs Up IconUpvote Thumbs Down Icon

Q:   What option should I choose to be considered for further JoSAA rounds while keeping my current seat?

    A:

If you have accepted a seat in a certain round and would like to be considered for a seat of higher preference in any Institute, you need to choose the option of ‘Float’. Further, if you are allocated a seat of higher preference in a subsequent round of JoSAA seat allocation, your earlier accepted seat will be automatically cancelled and you will have to accept the newly allocated seat. If you are not allocated a seat of higher preference in a subsequent round, you will continue in the already accepted seat and you will also be considered for seat allocation in any Institute (based on your preference in the choice list) in the subsequent rounds if you continue with the ‘Float’ option.

Q:   What is the highest cutoff for admission among various colleges participating in JoSAA counselling?

    A:

Among the IITs, IIT Bombay has the highest admisison cutoff for the computer Science course, followed by IIT Delhi fo the same course. Among the NITs, the highest admisison cutoff is for NIT Trichy for the Computer Science and Engineering, followed by NIT Rourkela for the same course.

However, candidates must note that the cutoff might vary every year for all courses and colleges. The above observation is as per past trends.

Thumbs Up IconUpvote Thumbs Down Icon

Q:   What is the lowest rank required to get a seat through JoSAA or CSAB counseling?

    A:

The least rank to get a seat through JoSAA or CSAB counselling can vary greatly depending on the course and the institute. However, here are some general observations:

For JoSAA counselling, candidates can get admission in NITs, IIITs, IITs, and GFTIs1. While admission is possible up to a 3 Lacs rank in JEE Main, securing admission in popular NITs and B.Tech specializations is limited for a low rank in JEE Main (above 1,00,000).
After the conclusion of six rounds of JoSAA counselling, two special rounds are conducted by CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) for the vacant seats1. The list of vacant seats shall be displayed in advance so that the candidates can plan college options and participate in the counselling process.

Please note that these are approximate figures and the actual cutoff may vary each year based on several factors such as the difficulty level of the JEE Main exam, number of applicants, number of seats available, and the category of the candidate.

For the most accurate information, I recommend checking the official JoSAA or CSAB websites during the admission season as they release the category-wise opening and closing ranks after each round of counselling.

Check out this article for more details: Best Colleges for Low JEE Main Rank/Scores

Q:   What is JoSAA counselling cutoff?

    A:

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) publishes cutoffs as opening and closing ranks after each round of seat allotment. The opening rank represents the highest rank from which an institute begins offering seats in a particular course, while the closing rank indicates the lowest rank for which seats are available. For JoSAA, the cutoff ranks for IITs will be based on JEE Advanced ranks, whereas the cutoffs for NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) will be determined by JEE Main ranks.

Q:   Which counseling should I appear to get a good college and good branch: JoSAA, CSAB or AKTU?

    A:

To secure admission in a good college and preferred branch, you should prioritize appearing for JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counseling if you have qualified in JEE Main or JEE Advanced. JoSAA manages the centralized seat allocation process for admissions to 110 participating institutes, including prestigious institutions like IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs across India.

CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) is specifically for admissions to NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs for candidates who did not participate or were not allotted a seat through JoSAA.

AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University) counseling is relevant for admissions to colleges affiliated with AKTU in Uttar Pradesh.

Considering JoSAA will give you access to a wide range of institutions and branches based on your JEE Main or JEE Advanced rank, making it a preferable choice for securing admission in a good college and desired branch.

Q:   Which colleges can I get through JoSAA or CSAB with 66000 rank in JEE? I have a domicile in Chhattisgarh.

    A:

You can apply for admission to a number of NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology), and other GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) or CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) counselling if you have a JEE Main rank of 66000 and you live in Chhattisgarh. The following are some options to think about: NITs: Depending on their various cutoff ranks from prior years, you may have opportunities at NITs like NIT Raipur, NIT Nagpur, NIT Surathkal, and NIT Warangal. IIITs: You may be able to access establishments such as IIIT Guwahati, IIIT Kalyani, IIITDM Jabalpur, IIIT Kota, and IIIT Naya Raipur. additional GFTIs: A number of additional institutions take part in CSAB counselling, including GFTI Hyderabad, GFTI Gandhinagar, and GFTI Bhopal.

Q:   What would be the best options in JoSAA counseling with a general rank of more than 2 lakh in JEE Mains?

    A:

A general rank of more than 2 Lacs in JEE Main, your options in JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counseling will primarily focus on selecting engineering colleges and programs where the cutoff ranks typically extend beyond the top ranks, include a wide range of institutes and branches in your preferred list. This increases your chances of securing a seat in a college that aligns with your preferences and matches your rank.Look into NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) that historically have lower cutoff ranks or more available seats in later rounds of counseling.

Q:   If I got a rank above 9 lakhs in JEE Mains, can I still apply for JoSAA counselling to get the best colleges under this rank?

    A:

A JEE rank of more than 70,000 is typically regarded as low, and applicants frequently give up on getting into the NITs and B.Tech programmes of their choice. The good news is that a number of universities, such as NITs and IIITs, accept JEE Main low scores up to 2,000,000. Based on the data from the previous year, NIT Mizoram has the lowest cutoff with a closing rank of 678406 for B.Tech. Civil Engineering (Gender-Neutral). It is followed by NIT Sikkim, which has a JEE Main rank of 639272 for B.Tech. EEE, and NIT Agartala, which has a JEE Main rank of 287950 for B.Tech. Biotech & Bio Chem Engineering. Therefore a rank of 9 Lacs can also have a chance of getting into colleges.

To get a government engineering college in Punjab through JoSAA, aim for a JEE Mains rank within 10,000–30,000 for top colleges like PEC and NIT Jalandhar. Rankings of 70,000 or higher may be adequate for state quotas or lower-tier universities, depending on the branch and category.
