What is Top 20 Percentile Cutoff Marks Of Class 12 for IT, NIT, IIIT, CFTI Admission?
Candidates must take note that "20 percentile" is not the same as "20 per cent". The term "Top 20 percentile" refers to a statistical measure indicating that a given result surpasses 20% of all results in the dataset, placing it above those results while falling below the remaining 80%. In other words, this metric provides a way to gauge performance relative to the overall distribution, highlighting where a particular outcome stands within the context of its peers.
Given the variability in scoring schemes across different examination boards, the cutoff scores for candidates in the top 20 percentile can differ significantly. The determination of category-specific cutoff marks for this percentile is derived from the performance metrics of successful candidates across all requisite subjects in their respective boards for the specific examination year.
The marks scored in the following five subjects will be considered for calculating the cut-off marks for fulfilling the top 20 percentile criterion.
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
- A language and
- Any subject other than the above four (the subject with the highest marks will be considered).
What if my class 12 school board do not provide top 20 percentile cutoff data? In case a Board does not provide information about the cut-off for the top 20 percentile, the candidate will have to produce a certificate from the respective Board stating that they fall within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates. If the candidate fails to do so, then the cut-off marks, in the respective categories, for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be used. |

Q: Can I get NIT with 95 percentile in JEE Main?
It is possible for you to secure a seat in an NIT (National Institute of Technology), although it may not guarantee your preferred branch or institute. If your percentile is above 96, your chances of getting into a respectable NIT increases, but you may need to compromise on your branch selection. However, if you aim for a decent NIT with a preferred branch in the core field, you would need to score above 97.5%. On the other hand, if your goal is to get admission to a top college with the CSE (Computer Science and Engineering) branch, your score would need to be higher than 99.4%.

To get a government engineering college in Punjab through JoSAA, aim for a JEE Mains rank within 10,000–30,000 for top colleges like PEC and NIT Jalandhar. Rankings of 70,000 or higher may be adequate for state quotas or lower-tier universities, depending on the branch and category.

If the candidate’s rank matches with the one released by the institute, candidate can register on the official website of JOSAA, and fill the choices. A mock seat allotment takes place after which the final results of the allotment are released.
