Is B.E./B.Tech at GCEK Worth the Investment?

Based on the reviews and feedback from students and alumni, here's a summary of the pros and cons:

    Pros:

    * Good Infrastructure: The college has a well-maintained campus with modern facilities, including Wi-Fi, laboratories, and a central library.
    * Strong Faculty: Most faculty members are well-qualified with postgraduate degrees from reputed institutions, and some have industrial experience.
    * Relevant Curriculum: The course curriculum is updated regularly to align with industry requirements, making students industry-ready.
    * Placement Opportunities: The college has tie-ups with several IT companies, and around 60-70% of students get placed in campus recruitments.
    * Scholarships Available: Scholarships are available for deserving students, and the college also assists in applying for external scholarships.
    * Extra-Curricular Activities: The college encourages participation in extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and cultural events.
    * Location: The college is situated near NIFT, providing opportunities to interact with students from other institutions.

    Cons:

    * Limited Core Company Recruitment: The college struggles to attract core companies for placements in certain branches, such as mechanical engineering.
    * Curriculum Issues: Some students feel that the curriculum is too theoretical and lacks hands-on training.
    * Hostel Facilities: While the hostel facilities are decent, some students find the location and quality of food to be inadequate.
    * Pass Percentage: The pass percentage of the college is relatively lower compared to others, which may raise concerns about academic rigor.

Overall, the majority of students and alumni agree that GCEK provides a good educational experience, with strong faculties, decent infrastructure, and reasonable placement opportunities. However, the limited core company recruitment and curriculum issues may require attention from the institution to improve further.

It's essential to weigh these factors against your individual priorities and goals when deciding whether B.E./B.Tech at GCEK is worth the investment.

Gcek- the best engineering college in northern Kerala.
Placements: The placements offered by Government College of Engineering Kannur were lesser last year compared to previous years. One of the students from Electronics and Communication received an 18 LPA package. The average package in GCEK is 4 LPA. There is an active placement cell to prepare students for placement drives.
Infrastructure: GCE Kannur has well-equipped labs and workshops for all departments. The college has Wi-Fi available in the main block. Labs and classrooms are high-tech. There is a main library and individual libraries for departments. Regarding the hostel, we have 3 blocks (A, B, C) for girls and two blocks (A, B) for boys. Hostel admission is based on government norms (family income, distance from home, academic performance). The quality of food provided is very good. We have non-veg available on almost 4-5 days per week. There is a hospital located 100 meters from the boys' hostel. The boys' hostel has basketball and volleyball courts, as well as indoor sports like table tennis.
Faculty: Most of the faculty members are well-educated and experienced. They are very friendly and maintain a good relationship with students. The college is under APJ Abdul Kalam Technology University, and our batch follows KTU's 2019 scheme. It is a little bit older, but KTU is going to introduce a new scheme in 2024. In each semester, there are two series exams and one semester exam. Exams are easy to pass if you have an understanding of the subjects. In the 2024 batch's results, we had a 77.6% pass percentage, which is 4th in the university and 2nd among government colleges.
Other: I chose Electronics and Communication Engineering because I thought it would have more applications and opportunities in the future. The college offers good facilities to make you a skilled engineer. The college has a tech fest called XPLORE, which is happening in 2024. It is a national-level tech fest. The college offers good sports facilities, including a large football and cricket ground, basketball, volleyball, and badminton courts, etc. The college has an indoor auditorium, open-air auditorium, placement hall, library, well-equipped gymnasium, canteen, co-operative store, etc. The college offers many scholarships that can cover your full tuition fee. By the way, the tuition fee is just around 10k per year.

    Government College of Engineering, Kannur.
Placements: The placements at GCEK are average, with approximately 60 percent of students securing placements last year. The highest package offered was 12 LPA, while the lowest was 3 LPA, with an average of 5 LPA. Top recruiting companies include Cognizant, Larsen and Toubro, TCS, Cred, Adani Oil and Gas, etc.
Infrastructure: Moving on to the infrastructure of the college, it is good. There are 5 departments in the college, including Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Civil, and Mechanical. Each department has separate classrooms, and there are libraries for academic use.
Faculty: All the teachers are very helpful, qualified, and knowledgeable. The course curriculum is highly relevant, following KTU standards, making students industry-ready. Equal weightage is given to both practical and theoretical aspects. Semester exams are challenging, with a pass percentage set at 60 percent.

    My dream college-GCE Kannur.
Placements: Only about 20 to 30 students get placed this year. In the electrical branch, L&T was the core company and came with a package of 6 LPA. Internships are done by the students themselves in the nearby keltron and substation. Mainly, we are placed in software roles, like developing and testing, which are very rare.
Infrastructure: Our college infrastructure is one of the best thing. And it was also one of the reason I joined college. It was well structured with labs, departments, auditoriums, stadiums, etc. Our hostels are some of the best hostel with hygiene food and all other facilities. Our canteen food was also very tasty and cheap. It was with quality food at cheap price.
Faculty: In most of the departments, experienced, capable faculty members are there. Their teaching experience and care for each student make it unique. Every faculty member is well-behaved and doesn't hesitate to teach anyone. They guide us in a proper way in our project and seminar too. In our final year project, we were able to work without any difficulty because of the facilities in the lab and the lab assistance we got. Semester exams are quite tough, although we get a pass percentage of 70% or above in each semester.
Other: I chose electrical engineering because it was very challenging course among all the engineering streams. My course helped me develop many technical skills that will help me in future career. Our college hosts various IEEE, ISTE, etc. events. Also in very 4 years, we are having a national-level tech fest.

Review of Government College of Engineering Kannur.
Placements: I am currently pursuing a B.Tech. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The last batch that passed out had a placement rate of 75%, mostly in the software and IT fields. Core placements were considerably low considering the ongoing recession. Maxlinear, Bosch, etc. were the major core companies that visited us. The maximum CTC in our department was 9 LPA and the average CTC was 4.5 LPA.
Infrastructure: Our college boasts a really impressive infrastructure, even when compared with the nearby engineering colleges in the Malabar region. It was commented as having labs of the level equal to IITs and NITs by the team visiting us from the NBA accreditation team.
Faculty: Our course and college come under the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. And it is almost on par with the engineering curriculum of major institutions in India and abroad. The faculty at GCEK is highly qualified for all departments. Due to the active involvement of students and the Student Union, some revolutionary changes are being made to the curriculum and study patterns.
Other: Campus life is something that you would hold close to your heart if you passed out of this college. The college union and the various student clubs are very vibrant and regularly host various events involving the students. The college also has supporting infrastructure for hosting such events. Explore is a national-level techfest conducted by GCEK that is scheduled to be hosted in 2024. The presence of other colleges nearby, like the NIFT, etc., also helps in networking and making new peers.

One of the best emerging colleges in Kerala.
Placements: The placement in my college is pretty good. CSE and EC departments have a much better placement records compared to other branches. The highest package offered in 2023 was 18LPA. Average package is around 7-8LPA. In CS almost 70% are placed. Internship opportunities are also provided by some.
Infrastructure: Excellent facilities. Wi-Fi is available throughout the campus and in hostels as well. The food in the mess is average. Canteen food is cheap and pretty good as well. Excellent facilities for all kinds of indoor and outdoor sports. The labs are fully air conditioned.
Faculty: Since it is a government college, the faculty members are highly educated. Our department is NBA accredited and is highly recognised. Follows the curriculum of KTU and is pretty relevant. The exams are moderate to easy difficult. The pass percentage is 40.

Our college gives good vibes to students.
Placements: Less placements are provided in the civil engineering department. The highest salary package offered is more than 4 LPA and the lowest salary package is 1.5 LPA. The recruiting companies are Byjus, L&T, etc. More than 50% of students get internships from different companies. The roles offered are site engineer, planning, etc.
Infrastructure: High-quality Wi-Fi is provided in the college and hostel. Labs are very good with high-quality instructors and instruments. Classrooms are good and have very good infrastructure. Library has all types of books related to academic studies and extracurricular learning. Hostels have different grounds and a good mess.
Faculty: Teachers in our college are very good and well educated with Ph.Ds in their subjects. Teaching quality is very good. The course curriculum is relevant. Semester exams are a bit tough but not if students work hard.
Other: I chose this course because of my interest in drawing. The best thing about our course is that students can do independent work on their own. College life is very good. Many different events are organised in our college. Our college provides different types of scholarships to eligible students.
