MICA Alumnus Varun Dua’s Startup, Acko, Becomes India’s Recent Unicorn

January 18, 2022: MICA, Ahmedabad, is pleased to announce that ACKO, an insurtech startup co-founded by MICA alumnus Mr. Varun Dua, has recently become India's unicorn after raising $255 million in a fundraising round led by private equity firms General Atlantic and Multiples Private Equity at a valuation of $1.1 billion.

ACKO is a digital platform for insurance products founded by Varun Dua and Ruchi Deepak, with over 70 million customers and a run-rate of $150 million in premiums.

"I don't think becoming a Unicorn changes anything because it's business as usual the next day," Varun Dua, a 2003 MICA graduate, remarked. “Our strategy hasn't changed, and we're still working hard to earn client trust. Unicorn status, on the other hand, is recognition for all of your hard work. It's no minor feat what our teams have accomplished in such a short time, especially considering Covid-19 has disrupted 33% of ACKO's whole existence. However, it was only possible because of our investors' and customers' faith in ACKO", Varun continued.

"I think being a technologyfirst firm has been the game-changer for ACKO," Dua said when asked what altered the game for ACKO. “Being tech-first allowed us to better price our items; we can offer them for less money since we don't need agents or middlemen, and we can deliver a better fulfilment experience. Customers are evolving, and I believe that if we are truthful, people will buy our items.

ACKO now wants to help their consumers with more serious issues. As we progress, we'd like to focus on improving our customers' access to high-quality healthcare with no hidden costs, as well as learning how to use data to predict the likelihood of accidents and diseases, and how to utilise technology to decrease hazards, among other things. We will also invest in forming teams to assist us in resolving these issues."

MICA Launches Mi-Empathy, A Pan-India Project To Support Covid Affected Students, In Collaboration With The Association Of Development Communication (ADC)

October 18, 2021: In response to the current circumstances, MICA Ahmedabad - The School of Ideas, in conjunction with the Association of Development Communication, has created MI-EMPATHY, a pan-India programme to support Covid-affected students (ADC).

MI-EMPATHY will serve as a connecting point for organisations, providing networking assistance, project creation, implementation, documentation, crowd-funding, and contact mobilization. The project's goal is to help troubled post-secondary students. The first phase will concentrate on the 3.8 million students who attend technical schools. As part of the project, a working group comprised of MICA instructors, staff, and students, as well as ADC members, will gather data, develop due diligence procedures, and establish criteria for selecting and prioritising eligible cases.

This project aims to reach out to the impacted students, collect information from them, and reach out to institutions and the government for assistance.

Prof. Arbind Sinha, senior academic at MICA and Vice-President of ADC, the brains behind the campaign, said, "Many students throughout the country have lost their earning member(s) due to Covid in the last one and a half years." As a result, several of these students cannot pay fees and are forced to drop out. Our goal is to develop a paradigm that involves all stakeholders, including institutions, state and federal governments, and philanthropic benefactors."

After gathering the information, the team will connect such students with teaching and training organisations, requesting that they assist them in their academic pursuits on compassionate and humanitarian grounds. The MI-EMPATHY team will also approach government departments at the federal and state levels, as well as other philanthropic organizations and individuals, to support and fund this worthy cause.

MICA To Host A Post-Doc Fellow With A Prestigious Grant From The Southern Centre For Inequality Studies, University Of Witwatersrand Johannesburg

October 11, 2021: As part of its efforts to strengthen ties with international institutions, MICA, Ahmedabad, India's premier management school for Strategic Marketing and Communications, will host a post-doctoral fellow with a prestigious grant from the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies, University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg.

As part of the research funding, Dr Sai Amulya Komarraju, a postdoctoral scholar from the University of Hyderabad, will investigate the experiences of male workers in a highly feminine profession such as domestic and salon labour.

She is presently the sector leader (salon services) at FemLab.Co, an IDRC-funded initiative that studies and provides policy and design solutions to the challenges faced by women workers in the informal sector.

MICA's Chair of the Center for Development Management and Communication, Prof. Manisha Pathak Shelat, noted, "In the areas of research and publication, CDMC has a considerable impact. Amulya is a fantastic addition to our group. Her collaboration with CDMC strengthens our ties with three prestigious institutions: Erasmus University in Amsterdam, the University of Hyderabad, and the University of Witwatersrand's Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (SCIS), a leading policy institute that fosters innovative research on the role of digital technologies in reshaping the world of work(ers) in the global South. Working together, we will make a significant contribution to a highly relevant field of gender, digital technology, and work-study."

"I filed for the SCIS funding to inquire into male employees' experiences in gendered professions of salon and domestic service, building on my role as research leader for salon work at FemLab," Dr Sai Amulya explained (within and outside the platform economy). “This is a significant element because both men and women from low castes and groups have historically conducted care duties. While the majority of the research focuses on female carers, it is vital to evaluate the implications of men's involvement in the sector for women. MICA-CDMC is known for developing communication research and collaboration with academics from all around the world," she went on to remark. I couldn't have asked for a better home for this effort, given the shared values of social impact and sustainability."

Father Of Modern Marketing Shares Marketing Mantras For The Post-Pandemic World With MICA Students

August 5, 2021: The students at MICA, Ahmedabad, were overwhelmed with emotion as they listened to Dr. Philip Kotler, the Father of Modern Marketing, share marketing mantras for the post-pandemic world. On Sunday, Dr Philip Kotler, India's most important management thinker, spoke at MICA, India's premier institute for Strategic Marketing and Communications, imparting his expertise and introducing students to new marketing elements. Dr Kotler spoke to a virtual audience of approximately 500 people on the company's responsibilities in modern times, as well as the role of marketing in business and society. The interactive event served as a warm-up for MICA's annual marketing festival, MICANVAS.

He stressed the need for Human-to-Human marketing as the new marketing approach. "Consumer journey mapping, touchpoint marketing, and persona marketing can all help you learn more about your customers. Influencer marketing, omnichannel marketing, lean marketing, content marketing, and social cause marketing will be among the new marketing's primary aspects." MarkTech, he claims, is the future of marketing, combining marketing automation, 5D printing, artificial intelligence, voice and facial recognition, and augmented and virtual reality.

“Companies will have to clarify their purpose to deal with today's difficulties”, he said. "Climate change is a serious issue. However, now is the moment to consider traditional marketing vs. long-term marketing. False needs must be eliminated by businesses. Instead, they must acknowledge that customers desire a better balance of work and leisure, and that shopping and consuming may therefore play just a minor role in their life." The five forces that will affect the economy, according to him, are pandemics, climate change, wealth disparity, technology developments, and polarisation.

He suggested that focusing more on consumer attributes would be beneficial "Before purchasing, consumers will gather much more information, such as scandals and ratings. They will be more concerned about health and safety issues. They'll install additional ad-blocking software and refuse to answer unsolicited phone calls. They would prefer to consume less and enjoy a simpler lifestyle."

Dr Kotler responded to some of the questions posed by MICA students near the end of the session. "Audiences are increasingly polarised, driving firms to remake themselves overnight," a student, for example, asked. How do they measure the risk of losing clients in such a situation? "If the brand is not stating what people are thinking about, it sends a clear message," Dr Kotler answered. “Brands should be more concerned with their values than with what is ethical and profitable." Another student asked his counsel for new-age organisations struggling to get their work noticed in a cluttered world. Dr Kotler's advice includes acquiring a deeper awareness of needs beyond the superficial and thinking in new ways.
