After MHRD, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has also approved a regulation to conduct a single entrance examination from 2018 for admissions to all engineering colleges in India.

Authorising a comprehensive package, the council directed the institutes to opt for induction courses, yearly revision of curriculum and teacher training through SWAYAM platform.

With an aim to maintain the quality of education in the country, the Centre recently decided to introduce a single entrance exam for engineering & architecture college admissions from 2018. To be held various times a year, the exam will intend to reduce the influence of donations on admissions. However, the IITs will not be a part of this test. These premier institutes will continue to conduct their own entrance exam. Admissions to IITs will still be through JEE Advanced.

A senior HRD official was quoted saying, "The admission for IITs will continue as per the present scheme. IITs will conduct the joint entrance examination (advanced). Students who qualify JEE (mains) can appear for the JEE (advanced) examination. Approximately 2,00,000 students qualify to appear for JEE (advanced) examination."

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) have been asked to form and issue a "suitable regulation" to implement the same from the academic year commencing 2018.

According to these regulations, which are yet to be formulated by the AICTE, it would be compulsory for all technical institutes in the country to accept the exam scores for admitting students including the central agencies, state governments and private institutions. The move is expected to eliminate the need for students to take multiple entrance exams for admissions to engineering colleges.

AICTE is expected to standardise the testing process and keep in view the linguistic diversity of students.

Earlier it was reported that the government might make JEE(Joint Entrance Examination) Main the entrance exam for admissions to all engineering colleges across India.

As per information, MHRD will be setting up the National Testing Service Institute to conduct JEE-Main from 2018. The details are expected to be announced on Feb 1.

Currently, the admissions to tech colleges are on the basis of Class XII marks. With the new system, the institutes will have all the independence to decide the way they want to admit students - only on the basis of JEE Main scores or give some weightage to Class 12th exams. One of the officials was quoted as saying, "It will be up to the universities and colleges to decide if they want to give 20% weightage to class XII board or 40%".

"They will have this autonomy. But it will be mandatory for all of them to accept the test for the purpose of admissions", the source further added.

Recently, Shiksha reported that JEE Main was likely to become the single engineering entrance exam on the lines of NEET basis which MHRD was planning a single national level test as the sole criteria for admissions to engineering colleges across India.

At present, JEE Main is conducted by CBSE(Central Board of Secondary Education) for admissions to NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs(Centrally Funded Technical Institutes). While on the other hand, JEE Advanced is used for admissions to IITs.

AICTE is also considering a national level Exit Exam for BTech Grads to test employability.
