How my brother mentored me in choosing the right career path: Saumya Singh

It is a true story of every typical Indian family where the future of a child is at the utmost priority. My family is nothing different from these typical Indian families and keeping up to the above illustration, my parents were very much interested in what making the choice of a right career path for me. Although, this was not a quarrelsome task as I already had my brother as my mentor. The latter was already in BITS PILANI, pursuing his BTech in electrical engineering.

He was always there to guide me about the current scenario of the competitive world which is all about success in entrance examinations. Under his support and guidance, I managed to choose PCMC (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computers) in class 12^th. My aspiration to become a hard working student was a strong reason behind making a choice of this particular stream. This was not the only reason as I had also developed interest in this field after going through a couple of articles in various newspaper.

How I cracked my College admissions?

Similar to any other engineering aspirant, I also dreamt of getting into one of the IITs. But unfortunately couldn’t make it and managed to bag a seat in SKIT, Jaipur. I did not lose hope after not being able to crack the IITs and decided to appear for a number of state counselings including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. This is how I got into SKIT and now I feel that it was the best decision I would have ever made. SKIT is now ranked as one of the most renowned educational institutions. And was also ranked 3^rd by RT. In the year 2017, the position has raised to number 1. Soon after the JEE mains results were declared, I got myself enrolled in RTU (Rajasthan Technical university) and appeared for the counseling procedure for the final seat allocation.

I also got enrolled into coaching classes while preparing for the entrance examination. I was guided by a group of experienced teachers from IIT’s. Apart from the coaching classes, I also took the extra test series of resonance in order to test myself after every few months. My strategy was to devote more time to concept building and solving level 1 and 2 questions so as to do well in class 12^th boards and IIT mains entrance examination.

Apart from JEE Mains I also filled forms for COMEDK, UPSEE, IPUCET, VITEEE and SRMJEE.  As per my understanding, every entrance examination has a different preparatory approach which has to be critically taken care of. No one likes wasting the crucial time beating around the bush and I personally believe that one should follow a smart approach of referring to the past years papers and standard books for better results. Apart from the IITs I also aspired to bag a seat in either of the colleges including, MBM Jodhpur, LNMIIT and JECRC but couldn’t succeed. After all the struggle’s and failures, I still managed to get admissions into one of the most disciplined, famous and topmost colleges of Rajasthan, SKIT JAIPUR.

My College Life

As I am a hosteller here in my campus I don’t prefer going anywhere for outings. Instead, I devote time to productive activities apart from the academic curriculum. I am a member of toastmasters club which is basically a public speaking platform from California. It is to improve my communication and leadership skills. I find this as one of the most effective ways to utilize my time. Apart from this, I also spend time reading interesting books in the college library.

There is no doubt that our college has the best lecturers, HOD’s and professors. All have profound knowledge in their fields. They not only guide us academically but also in events, conferences and various other competitions. So I always attend all the classes especially mathematics, data structures. I happen to be paid and active participant of toastmasters club and have coordinated many events and conferences.

Apart from this I have also joined many clubs in my college like tech-innova, topaz which is the entrepreneurship club and many others. I was one of the core team members and participant in ENIGMA (the coding event) in IIT BOMBAY’s major event the TECHFEST.  I often participate in literary events, coding events and conferences held at our college. If given a chance I would like to attend the International Robotics Event and MUN (Model United Nations) which is usually held at IIT BOMBAY and LNMIIT respectively.

Being in a college is actually an opportunity to improve your existing skills. Here in SKIT, I got platforms to participate and showcase my talent. My confidence level and managing skills has tremendously boosted. Rightly said, expectations comes from hard work and vice-versa.
