LSAT India Exam Prep Tips

LSAT India is an interesting and challenging exam, with a pattern that is quite different from all other Law entrance exams in India. LSAT 2025 is going to be conducted in two sessions: January 2025 session and May 2025 session. The LSAT India 2025 for January session will tentatively be conducted in the fourth week of January 2025. However, LSAT India 2025 for May 2025 session will tenatively be held in the fourth week of May 2025. As such, if you are preparing for CLAT or AILET , it would not necessarily mean your preparation for LSAT India is included. This is both positive and negative for students, as we will see below.

Before we get into the detailed tips and tricks for LSAT India, let’s make sure we understand the pattern first. LSAT India is going to be a 2 hour 20 minute paper-and-pen objective type exam. The paper is divided into 4 sections of 35 minutes each. The sections are:

  • Section 1 - Analytical Reasoning
  • Sections 2- Logical Reasoning 1
  • Section 3 - Logical Reasoning 2
  • Section 4 - Reading Comprehension

Each section will have 24-28 questions, giving a total of 92-100 questions in the exam. All questions have equal marks, and there is no negative marking. You are also not allowed to switch between sections during the exam.

We have performed a careful analysis of the LSAT India pattern and mock tests, and have assembled a list of important tips and strategies. Following these strategies should add a definite edge to your performance!

Q:   Which is more difficult, LSAT India or CLAT?

A:

CLAT is more difficult than LSAT India because of the time constraint. Candidates have only two hours to solve 150 questions in the exam. However, the time limit to solve 92 questions in the LSAT India exam is 2 hours and 20 minutes. Thus, it is difficult for candidates to complete all questions in the CLAT exam within such a short time limit. Moreover, the CLAT question paper includes questions from Current Affairs and General Knowledge. However, the LSAT India question paper does not include questions on Current Affairs and General Knowledge. Consequently, the LSAT India is comparatively easy because of its question paper pattern.

1) LSAT India is not CLAT – this realisation is the most important thing for all students aspiring to secure admission in a good law school in India. LSAT is not like CLAT. It does not have any section called Legal Aptitude or General Awareness. There will be no questions of GK or Current Affairs asked, nor any that test your knowledge of the Law of Contract or the Hindu Marriage Act.

2) Understand the sections well– instead of GK and Law, LSAT exam tests you thoroughly on pure logic and knowledge of the English language. We will deal with each section separately in the points below.

  • Reading Comprehension– it is important to realise that the only thing you will be tested on is Reading Comprehension. There are going to be no parajumbles, no synonyms/antonyms, no fill in the blanks, idioms or legal maxims. You will simply be given 4 reading comprehension passages with 5-8 questions each. Expect a higher or tougher standard of passage than what you might see in other law entrance exams. You will need to practice more advanced types of passages and tougher types of questions. The passage may be taken from the fields of humanities, social sciences, biology, physical sciences or legal issues. The types of questions you might see are:
      • Finding the main idea or purpose
      • Meaning of words or phrases
      • Understanding the author’s tone or stance
To aid students, we have created a quick video that summarises the common challenges students face in Reading Comprehension and what you can do about them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEOXWUtkbSE.

3) Logical Reasoning – the Logical Reasoning section in LSAT India 2025 is more akin to Critical Reasoning in other exams. There are no questions on Clocks or Calendars or Direction Problems. Instead, you will be tested on topics like Statement-Assumption-Conclusion, Strengthening/Weakening Arguments and Fact-Inference-Judgment. Also, and perhaps more important – there are 2 sections of Logical Reasoning in LSAT! So it makes up 50% of the paper, 50% of the marks, and should definitely receive at least 50% of your preparation time.

4) Analytical Reasoning – this section will have questions that are often called Arrangement or Ranking puzzles. The format of the question bears mentioning – usually, there is a short passage of text consisting of a few sentences of given information, and then 3-4 questions all based on this information. Further, if the information is understood and processed once, the 3-4 questions do not take any additional time to solve. So with practice, this section has the potential to be high-scoring.

5) No Maths – there will be no questions based on mathematics in LSAT. This is again quite different from other law entrance exams in India, and should come as a relief to many students!

6) Simulate effectively – as part of your preparation plan, you should aim to give several mock tests. However, it is important to correctly simulate exam conditions as much as possible – including the time limits, giving the 4 sections without breaks, and turning your phone off to avoid distractions!

7) Don’t just practice, analyse – we have seen several students carrying a strong belief in giving a large number of mock tests. While giving mock tests is helpful and should certainly feature in your preparation plan, you should not total up your scores after the mock and leave it there. A mock test contains a wealth of information, and if carefully analysed, can reveal important insights about your knowledge in different parts of the syllabus. Examine the question you did not get, and understand the underlying reason for not getting them. Was it because you did not understand a crucial concept? Make sure you fix that before heading off to write the next test!

8) Guessing – remember, there is NO negative marking in LSAT 2025! So you should not leave a single question unanswered in any section in the entire paper. If you are running short of time, just guess. After all, even in a blind guess there is still a 20-25% chance you will get the answer right!

9) All questions carry equal marks – so if you feel a question is going to be lengthy or is taking you more time than anticipated, skip it right away and move to the next one. For all you know, the next one may be much easier!

10) No switching between sections – in each 35 minute window, you can attempt only one specific section. This is a good thing, as it levels the playing field for all students and makes it important to be balanced in preparation. For example, if a student is strong in Reading Comprehension, he/she has nothing to gain by finishing the Reading Comprehension section earlier. Every student gets the same time for the same set of questions.

These are a few tips and strategies we have assembled over several years of helping students perform to their fullest potential in varied competitive exams. Hope you find them useful!
