College Review: Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship Development (IMED) Pune

Considered to be one of the oldest B-schools in the country, Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship Development (IMED) , Pune was established in 1978. The institute is known for its experienced faculty as well as serious and learn-a-holic students.

Insiders share that when one enters IMED for the first time, the last 10-15 years of their lives flashes before their eyes. And please do not jump to any conclusions; this is not because the college looks to be from an old era, this happens because the IMED campus also constitutes a primary school, a senior secondary school as well as graduation and post graduation colleges. Students confess that many-a-times when they head for classes in the morning, they get nostalgic as a school assembly is mid-way before their eyes.

Infrastructure

IMED Infrastructure

The college campus offers a wide range of amenities such as hostels, play fields, gardens, canteen, banking and postal services, dispensary, watch and ward services, vehicle parking etc. The campus is well-maintained and has latest teaching/learning aids which include reprographic equipments, EPBX, FAX machine, OHPs, audio-visual equipments, public address system, slide projectors, LCD projector, specialized fixtures and seating system, computer hardware and software’s etc.

The campus houses five major and other smaller colleges primary among them are IMED, New Law College Pune, Pune College of Pharmacy and Yashwantrao Chavan college of Arts Science & Commerce.

The classrooms are not air conditioned; however, the seats are comfortable. Students are made to sit on benches with attached desks which can seat two students at a time.  The computer centre at IMED has more than 400 computers. The entire campus is wifi enabled. The college has a great seminar hall which can seat 250-300 students at a time.

The library at IMED has more than 51,000 books and over 232 national and international journals and magazines. Different subjects are allotted different sections in the library making it easier to find books, if and when the need arises.

The campus has CCTV cameras all over the place and students are monitored day-in and day-out.

Faculty

Faculty at IMED is friendly with students and is open to discussing any problem they are facing; however, when it comes to studies they are extremely strict. Guest lectures are regularly conducted by officials holding senior management posts at renowned companies. Attendance is compulsory for these guest lectures.

The most popular professor at IMED is Dr. Sankhaye who is from the Marketing department and is also the Dean of student welfare. Students try their best not to miss his class as they feel that he understands them very well. His style of teaching involves asking students to come forward and explain what they have understood in the class, while the student explains he never interrupts them and listens patiently and at the end corrects the student if necessary and motivates them to think out-of-the-box without the fear of failing. In his class, students have no fear of being pointed out to be dumb or wrong and that is the reason why they do not fear sitting through his class.

Teaching Techniques

IMED Teaching Techniques

At IMED discussed based classes are held to teach students. The modes use may vary from presentations, case studies to role play. After a topic is taught students are asked to make presentations of their own on the topic. Students feel that their teachers teach them in such a way that they do not require any kind of handouts for the topics taught and classroom teaching is more than sufficient. However, professors do provide them with notes and names of books for reference

Surprise tests are not a common phenomenon at IMED. Students are intimated at least 10-12 days before a test is to take place. A regular schedule of all the classes as well as the tests and exams to be conducted is shared well in advance with the students.

Placements

IMED has a placement cell by the name ‘Corporate Resource Centre’ (CRC). The institute has a good record with approximately 100 blue chip companies visiting the institute every year. The highest salary package offered so far has been 14 lakhs p.a. and the average salary package is Rs. 6 lakhs p.a.

Attendance

Students at IMED need to have at least 80% attendance. The college is very strict as far as attendance is concerned and 30 evaluation marks are allotted to students on the basis of their attendance. Also, if a student does not possess the minimum attendance criteria then he/she is not allowed to fill the examination form.

It is said that the institute aims to prepare students for their future and thus wants them to be punctual, professional individuals. Students are given grace time period of 5-10 minutes to come late for lectures. However, they should have a genuine excuse for their late arrival.

College Crowd & Hangout Places

IMED College Crowd & Hangout Places

IMED’s crowd is not considered to be very happening but it houses students who are serious about their studies. Students get admitted to this college on the basis of merit as they have to clear a centralized entrance exam. Seniors at this college are extremely helpful and are always ready to advice their juniors on how to manage their time during studies as well as the pros and cons of joining or refusing to join a company.

The place where you see a majority of the college crowd hanging is Anandi restaurant which is just 10 steps away from the campus. Other places where students prefer to visit for snack time are Zest, a small street café, and Cheesy Diets. Inside campus students are usually seen sitting at the canteen or the reception area during recess.

Canteen

The canteen food at IMED has a very Maharashtra blend to it. The quality of food served along with the hygiene level maintained is up to standards. The food served is not subsidized but cost is marginally less to what is charged in the market.

Students claim that Vada Pao is the most delicious food that can be found on campus and Cholle Bhature is something one should refrain from ordering at the canteen.

College Fest

Expressions, is the annual cultural fest organized by the college. Around 20-25 colleges take part in the fest wherein fun events such as fashion shows and competitive events in dance, singing, rangoli-making, debates and cooking are conducted.

Verdict

IMED offers a very healthy atmosphere for students to study. The faculty is good and well-trained. However, sometimes excessive burden is put on the students. Also, the institute needs to add more MBA specializations as part of its current course syllabus or as different programmes altogether.
