Students’ Speak: Common eligibility checklist for students before applying for placements
There are several eligibility requirements that students should fulfill before they wish to take part in the campus placement process. Abdullah Salman points out a few common placement eligibility criteria that most companies want you to meet.
One of the foremost reasons behind joining any reputed B-school is a good placement that in turn ensures good ROI (Return on Investments).
Hence, to get placed successfully, we must try to equip ourselves with both the required and desired skillsets as demanded by the nature of various jobs. Usually, a college expects 60 percent (if the company does not ask for a specific percentage) in aggregate score. Similarly, for any course, college usually mandates at least 75 percent attendance to appear for the particular course exam.
For placements, some of the basic eligibility criteria can include the following:
- CGPA: Typically, we need to maintain a CGPA of 7/10 for attending interview rounds for most of the companies. If you have 6.5 CGPA then it is also acceptable in many cases. The eligibility requirement for minimum aggregate score varies from year to year and from company to company.
- Age: The age-limit can play a vital role especially for the banking companies coming for campus placements, as the age of the candidate should NOT be more than 27 years in most of the cases.
- Certifications/ Apprenticeship/ Achievements: Many financial companies lookout for certifications such as CFA, DBF, etc. Digital Marketing companies usually require Google and other domain-specific certifications. Sometimes, Operations companies seek candidates with Six-sigma certification, Project Management certification, etc. Certifications are usually considered add-ons and do not guarantee a job.
- Backlog/ Past academic records: Before you apply for placements and register with the placement cell of college, make sure that you do not have any backlog; companies usually do not allow candidates with backlogs to sit for the interview sessions. Therefore, clear all the backlogs if any before the placements season so that you do not put yourself in trouble.
- Prior work experience: Some companies seek experienced candidates for some senior-level roles while some look exclusively for freshers, depending on the job requirements.
- Domain-specific knowledge: Few companies seek domain-specific candidates such as Marketing, HR, Finance, Operations, IT systems, Analytics, etc. However, most companies don’t look for domain-specific candidates during the campus interview process.
- UG-background: Some companies such as companies from Tech sectors exclusively recruit candidates from engineering background such as TCS and few looks for non-engineers such as Ramco Cements.
- Academic record: As said earlier, most of the top companies even take into consideration your X, XII and UG percentage. In most cases, it should be above 60 percent, sometimes even above 70 percent, based on a company’s requirements.
- Gender: Few financial companies have very gender-specific requirements and job roles. For instance, few FMCG companies give preference to female candidates.
- Language: Some companies prefer candidates with adequate knowledge of Hindi and the local language of a particular state.
- Location preference: Companies often recruit candidates for a specific job location. We should be in general open to work across PAN India locations.
Others: Depending on the company and job profile, recruiters may have specific requirements that a candidate should be readily equipped for.
