Q:   How important is XAT cut off for selection to XLRI's PI round?

A:

XAT cut off is the most important factor in selection of candidates for XLRI Jamshedpur’s Personal Interview or PI round. Those who do not meet the cut off are not even taken into consideration for PI shortlisting. The two main parameters upon which candidates are short listed for the PI round are academic scores (class 10,12 and graduation) and XAT cut off.

Aspirants must note that they need to score as much or above the XAT cut off and should have a consistent academic record of high score to have greater chances of getting selected. It is not necessary that they will be called for the PI round if their XAT score matches the cut off. If any candidate with the same score has a better academic record, he/she will be selected over the other.

Q:   How can I apply for XLRI Delhi Campus BM programme?

A:

Candidates can apply for XLRI Delhi's Business Management programme on the official website by selecting the course and campus option while filling the XAT application form which is released in the first week of August every year. If they do not mention XLRI Delhi has their preferred exam in the XAT application form, they will not be eligible for admission to the institute. Candidates must remember that there is no separate application form for XLRI PGDM programmes, so they need to make the selection of institute in the XAT application form only. There is no option to edit the field in the form later so candidates must mention the institute in the XAT application form. There is no provision of filling the admission form after the exam or after result announcement.

Q:   How is the XAT percentile calculated?

A:
The XAT percentile is calculated based on the performance of a candidate relative to all other test-takers who appear for the XAT exam in a particular year. The percentile is a measure of the percentage of test-takers who have scored less than the candidate in the exam. The formula used to calculate the XAT percentile is as follows: Percentile = [ (Number of candidates who scored less than the candidate / Total number of candidates who appeared for the exam) x 100] For example, if a candidate scores 80 marks out of 100 in the XAT exam and 20,000 candidates appear for the exam, and out of those 20,000 candidates, 18,000 candidates score less than the candidate, then the percentile for the candidate would be calculated as follows: Percentile = [ (18,000/20,000) x 100] = 90 Therefore, the XAT percentile for the candidate would be 90. It is important to note that the XAT percentile may vary from year to year depending on the performance of all test-takers in the exam. Additionally, each participating institute may have its own cutoff percentile based on which candidates are shortlisted for the next stage of the admission process.

How To Calculate XAT Score?

XAT score of each candidate is calculated on the basis of raw scores obtained by them on every question that they attempt. To understand the XAT scoring process, first let’s look at the XAT marking scheme:

XAT Marking Scheme 2025

Right answer

+1 mark

Wrong answer

-0.25 marks

Unanswered questions

0 marks

8 consecutive unanswered questions

-0.10 marks

What is the XAT Score Calculation Process?

  • For XAT score calculation, the sum total of marks obtained in all the three sections (Verbal Ability, Decision Making & Quantitative Aptitude) is listed
  • GK score is not included in XAT score and percentile calculation
  • Qualifying candidates are then ranked according to total marks scored in XAT exam
  • Each candidate’s rank is divided by the remaining number of test takers and then multiplied by 100 to arrive at the XAT percentile score

Let’s understand XAT percentile calculation with an example:

Suppose 80,000 students took the XAT test and a candidate's rank is 500. Therefore that candidate's XAT percentile will be:

79,500/80,000x100=99.375

Q:   How is XAT score calculated?

A:

XAT score is calculated on the basis of raw scores obtained a candidate in each section. In the XAT exam, every correct answer carries 1 mark and every incorrect entry carries – 0.25 marks. There is no negative marking for skipping a question. But, in case of eight consecutive unanswered questions, 0.10 marks will be deducted. XAT has about 99 questions on which the score calculation is done. So, for example, if you have got 70 questions correct and 8 questions in correct, then your raw XAT score will be 70 – 1 = 69.

If you have not answered 8 questions consecutively, then your score will be 69- 0.10 =  68.90. This raw score will be further calculated to arrive at XAT percentile. Check here the XAT percentile calculation process: https://www.shiksha.com/mba/articles/xat-score-vs-percentile-how-much-xat-score-will-get-me-99-percentile-blogId-52337

Thumbs Up IconUpvote Thumbs Down Icon

Q:   Is there any negative marking in the XAT exam?

A:

Yes, the XAT exam has negative marking of -0.25 marks for wrong attempt. Unanswered questions have no negative marking but if there are 8 consecutive unanswered questions, 0.10 marks will be deducted. Thus, the candidates must select questions to solve very carefully in the XAT exam. They should solve only those questions which they know they can solve accurately. The XAT exam has sectional time limit too, so you may not want to waste time on a question that you cannot solve accurately. You stand to lose both time and marks. So be careful in selecting questions in the XAT exam.  The sectional cut off for XAT is usually 80 percent accuracy. Practice a lot of mock tests to develop this skill.

Thumbs Up IconUpvote Thumbs Down Icon

Q:   What is the marking scheme of the XAT exam?

A:

XAT is an MCQ based test and all questions carry equal marks. The total marks of the exam is 100 and every question carries 1 mark. Decision Making carries 22 marks, Verbal and Logical Ability carries 26 marks, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation carries 28 marks and General Knowledge carries 25 marks.

There is negative marking too in XAT, that you should be aware of. Check below the marking scheme of XAT.

  • One mark is awarded for each right answer
  • 0.25 marks is deducted for each wrong answer
  • 0.10 marks is deducted for more than eight unanswered consecutive questions
  • There is no negative marking in General Knowledge section
  • Scores of General Knowledge section will not be considered for calculating XAT score
  • The score of Essay Writing will be taken into consideration at the time of PI shortlisting

The other MBA colleges accepting XAT score for admission will conduct their selection process individually. They will also conduct PI alongwith group discussion or written ability test. Q:   What are the XAT cut off determining factors?

A:

XAT cut offs are determined by XLRI Jamshedpur and the important factors it takes into consideration for it include difficulty level of the exam, average scores, average pass percentage, number of seats, number of test takers and previous year’s cut offs. There is no official list of parameters for cut off determination but it is understood that these factors play an important role in the process.

It has been seen that XAT cut offs normally don’t change more than 1 or 2 percentile. For example, in XAT 2022, the cut off for PGDM BM course was 93 percentile for male candidates and in XAT 2023, it was 95. In XAT 2021, the cut off for same category was 94.

Q:   Is the XAT cutoff released by XLRI applicable to all XAT-accepting MBA colleges?

A:
No, not all MBA colleges that take the XAT will accept the XAT cutoff that was announced by XLRI. While other top B-schools taking XAT such as IMI, IMT, XIMB, Great Lakes, FORE, GIM, LBSIM, and TAPMI, will issue their own cutoffs based on their admission criteria, XLRI will release the XAT shortlist of applicants for admission 2023 for various XLRI programmes. The cutoffs may change based on elements like the quantity of applicants, the difficulty level of the exam, and the number of seats available. Each institute has its own admission requirements and procedure. To determine their odds of admission, candidates should review the cutoffs for each institution.

Q:   Do I need to fill XLRI form separately for admission through XAT?

A:

Candidates planning to take admission to XLRI Jamshedpur need not fill a separate form. The XAT application form 2025 will include a field in which the candidates have to select XLRI course in which they want to take admission.

However, candidates can select only XLRI Jamshedpur as a preferred college in the XAT 2025 application form. There is no option of selecting other XAT accepting colleges in the application form. For XAMI member institutes or other MBA colleges accepting XAT score for admission, you will be required to register separately on their respective official websites when the applications open. Most of the XAMI institutes start MBA application process after XAT result declaration. However, keep a check on the admission schedule of your target college, so that you don’t miss the application deadline.
