IIM Kozhikode launches Centre for Employment Relations and Labour Studies

Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIMK) has established an interdisciplinary think tank - Centre for Employment Relations and Labour Studies (CERLS) -- that would help in the transition of workers and economically weaker sections from the informal to the formal economy.

"The larger aim of this centre would be to mobilise ideas from fellow academia, thought leaders, government, and corporations to prevent the informalisation of formal jobs while championing sustainable enterprises. Additionally, the centre would work closely with organisations to maintain fair labour standards," said IIM Kozhikode director Professor Debashis Chatterjee, as reported by Deccan Herald.

The first conference by CERLS will take place in January 2024. The institute also plans to conduct labour conferences regularly each year. CERLS would be headed by Manoranjan Dhal, a professor in the Human Resource Management area at IIMK, the statement said.

"Further, mass downsizing, precarious employment conditions for the non-standard workers, and amplification of grievances of the migrant labour, construction workers as well as gig workers have increased in recent years. These are the very reasons that propelled the thought of establishing this centre," said Dhal.

Centre for Digital Innovation & Transformation (CDiT) at IIM Kozhikode recently inked MoU with the Kerala police to augment cybersecurity measures in policing.

"Collaboration would enable police to synergize on cybersecurity, cyber safety awareness, and other areas of mutual interest between Cyberdome and IIM-K," said P Prakash, IPS, Inspector General of Police, Nodal Officer.
