In yet another case, a 19-year-old student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his home in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The victim also left behind a two-page suicide note in which he had allegedly written “I quit”, with details about his studies and family, expressing disappointment.

The body of the victim was found hanging at his residence’s balcony on October 20, 2021. The additional superintendent of police said the suspected reason for suicide was depression. He said, “We are examining the letter. Prima facie, it appears that the victim was suffering from depression because of which he took the extreme step. Further investigations into the case are on.”

He further said the victim had been attending virtual lectures from his home due to the COVID-19 pandemic and added that his father was posted in the Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) as an additional director.

The figure of student suicides at IITs has increased in the past five years.
