5 booked for cheating in JEE Advanced 2023 exam in Hyderabad
The students were caught by the officials from different exam centres in Hyderabad with mobile phones that they allegedly used for copying in the exam.
The five students, who are all friends, have been issued a notice under Section 41 CrPC seeking their cooperation in further investigation, the police said. They were also booked under Sections 188 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under Section 8 of the Telangana Public Examination (Prevention of Malpractice and Unfair Means) Act. These students were caught by the officials from different exam centres with mobile phones that they allegedly used for copying in the exam.
The incident came to the fore when an invigilator caught a candidate with a mobile phone at an exam centre in Mallapur. On verifying the phone, the authorities came across a WhatsApp group on which questions and answers were being shared. They then informed the police and the exam authorities.
Another candidate was caught with a mobile phone from a JEE Advanced exam centre in Secunderabad. The exam authorities said the candidate was a topper of SSC and Intermediate exams and was sharing answers in the WhatsApp group.
Subsequently, two other candidates who were members of the same WhatsApp group and writing the exam at other centres were also caught wit mobile phones under the jurisdiction of LB Nagar and Malkajgiri police stations. The students were hiding the mobile phones in their innerwear while the one who has been caught for cheating from the Secunderabad exam centre had hid the phone in his shoe, the police said.
