IIT Kharagpur student dies; Suicide Suspected
As per reports, the death of the fourth-year student of IIT Kharagpur prima facie seems suicide, but the actual cause will be known after the postmortem report.
In a tragic incident, a fourth-year student of electrical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has allegedly died. The 22-year-old student was found hanging in one of the halls of IIT Kharagpur.
The deceased student was immediately taken to the hospital where he died during the treatment.
As per News 18 report, he was a native of Toorpan, Medak district in Telangana. Sources in police say that prima facie it seems to be suicide, but the actual cause will be ascertained after post-mortem. Last year in October, Faizan Ahmed, a third-year student of mechanical engineering, was found dead in IIT Kharagpur. He died in a hostel room on the campus. His family alleged he had been murdered for opposing ragging by seniors.
Faizan’s mother Rehana Ahmed recently said: “We have not received any justice. We still do not know why he died. At Jadavpur University, the authorities have established in their internal probe that a first-year student was ragged by senior students and recommended punishment. The IIT authorities in their internal probe admitted that my son was threatened, humiliated and verbally abused by senior students, but tried to pass off his death as suicide because he was under stress having missed out on an internship,” as reported by Telegraph India.
Based on the data shared by the education ministry, from 2018 to 2023, at least 39 out of a total of 98 deaths by suicide in top higher education institutions of India took place at the IITs, followed by 25 each at the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and centrally-funded universities. Another 13 such deaths were reported from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) from 2019 till date.
