The counselling session for around 40,000 seats across 100 premier technical institutes, including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and IIEST, around the country, is expected to be over in six rounds this year.
Earlier, all Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) use to admit students after conducting seven rounds of joint counselling.
Earlier, this week IIT-Delhi had proposed to drop one round of counselling this year and forwarded the proposal to the Joint Implementation Committee for approval, stated a media report.
The joint panel comprises the JEE Chairman of all IITs. IIT-Delhi is the organising institute for JEE (Advanced) 2020.
If accepted by all IITs, this proposal will be shared with the Central Seat Allocation Board, which coordinates admission for the NITs, IIITs and Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST). In other words, IIT-Delhiβs proposal will have a bearing on the admission process for all Centrally Funded Technical Institutions as they have a joint admission process.
Along with dropping one round of counseling sessions, IIT-Delhi has also proposed that the results for JEE (Advanced) 2020 should be announced within a week of the exam. Usually, it takes two weeks for the organizing institute to announce the results.
Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal had earlier announced that JEE (Advanced) will be conducted on August 23.

While talking about the proposal, of IITs, NITs, IIITs, and IIEST, around the country, to complete counseling sessions in six rounds this year, one of the IIT Delhi officials said: "This will help the IITs to start classes for first-year students by early October. This will only be possible if the institute completes six rounds of counselling between September 1 and October 1."
In most IITs, the new session usually begins in the last week of July.
