JEE Advanced 12th Percentage Criteria

JEE Advanced 2024 12th Percentage Criteria: 75% Mandatory for IIT Admissions

Today, on May 13, CBSE announced the Class 12 board results for 2024. According to CBSE data, 24,000 candidates have achieved scores above 95%, while 1.16 lakh students have scored above 90%. Additionally, over 1.22 lakh students have been placed in compartment. The overall pass percentage stands at 87.98%, with girls outperforming boys.

It's essential for engineering aspirants aiming for admission to IITs to note that despite qualifying the JEE Main 2024 cutoff for the JEE Advanced exam, they still need to secure a minimum of 75% marks in their Class 12 board exams to be eligible for IIT admission. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the minimum aggregate marks required are 65%. This same requirement also applies to admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. This year, experts project intense competition this year, with an estimated 11 students competing for each IIT seat.

75% Mandatory or IIT Admissions through JEE Advanced 2024

To qualify for admission to the IITs as per the guidelines provided by IIT Madras on the official JEE Advanced 2024 website, candidates must satisfy one of the following conditions:

Condition 1: Candidates must have passed their Class XII (or equivalent) board examination with a minimum of five subjects, securing at least 75% aggregate marks. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the minimum aggregate marks required are 65%.

Or,

Condition 2: Candidates should have cleared the Class XII (or equivalent) board examination with a minimum of five subjects and fall within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class XII (or equivalent) board examination category-wise. This percentile calculation will include all the mandatory subjects within a single academic year. Therefore, candidates opting for improvement in board examinations can aim to achieve either 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC, ST, and PwD) in one or more subjects after improvement, or they can aim to be within the top 20 percentile by enhancing grades in all subjects.

The subjects considered for calculating the aggregate marks and the cut-off marks for meeting the top 20 percentile criterion are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, a language (if the candidate has taken more than one language, then the language with the higher marks will be considered), and any subject other than the aforementioned four subjects (the subject with the highest marks will be considered).

Furthermore, candidates must adhere to the attempt limit for JEE Advanced 2024. They are allowed a maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years. For instance, a candidate who appeared for JEE Advanced in 2023 is eligible to appear again in 2024. However, a candidate who took the exam in 2022 is ineligible to sit for JEE Advanced 2024.

What to Do if Scored Less than 75% in Class 12 Boards?

Candidates who have scored below 75% in their Class 12 board exams have options to improve their scores. They can apply for revaluation or opt for improvement exams if their board provides such facilities. However, for candidates whose boards do not offer these options, alternatives include enrolling in the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) or taking a gap year to reappear for the exams the following year.
