To secure admission to IITs, candidates must meet one of two criteria: either obtain a minimum of 75% in their 10+2 exams or rank within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective board examination categories.

For the top 20 percentile criterion, candidates must have passed their Class XII (or equivalent) board exam with at least five subjects and be among the top 20 percentile in their board exam. This calculation includes all mandatory subjects within a single academic year. Candidates seeking to improve their board exam performance can either aim for a 75% aggregate (65% for SC, ST, and PwD) in one or more subjects after improvement or strive to rank within the top 20 percentile by enhancing grades in all subjects.

The subjects considered for calculating aggregate marks and fulfilling the top 20 percentile requirement include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, a language (the one with the higher marks if multiple languages are taken), and any other subject (the one with the highest marks).
