As per the information from the state Higher Education Department, out of more than 500 engineering colleges in the state which take part in counselling, at least 50 are about to get closed.

Despite taking a number of innovative steps in the education sector, Tamil Nadu has not been able to come up with a solution to the declining education quality in the engineering institutes. For almost a decade, engineering colleges in the state have been seeking help from the state government. As per the information from the state Higher Education Department, out of more than 500 engineering colleges in the state which take part in counselling, at least 50 are about to get closed. Apart from this, more than two dozen have approached the government to transform their institutions into arts and science colleges.

More than 50 colleges have raised their issues before the Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE), according to an official. Out of which, 30 of them approached with requests, looking for opportunities to convert to arts and science colleges. 19 colleges have written officially; seven colleges wanted approval for immediate closure and government’s aid to relocate their students to other colleges, and 12 colleges have requested permission to discontinue the admission process from the next academic year to end operations in three years. Administrations of many colleges have reached a level where they cannot handle huge institutions and the expenditure of running them given the substantial decline in admissions.

The cut-off marks for admissions in some universities and colleges were decreased remarkably, leading to a condition where many organisations saw most students failing. Many engineering college administrations were not able to invest to make students for the industry. Seventy per cent syllabus is obsolete and most colleges at the lower level decline to update the curriculum.
