Delhi University announces discontinuation of MPhil programmes from 2022-23

DU has decided to discontinue MPhil courses in line with the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Delhi University has announced to discontinue MPhil programmes from the academic session 2022-23. The decision has been taken to reorient various programmes run by the university in line with the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

As per a notification issued by DU, The existing MPhil Programme is to be discontinued from the academic year 2022- 23 in line with the NEP 2020. Discontinuation of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programmes is one of the major recommendations of the National Education Policy. Instead, it emphasises a four-year Bachelor’s degree (undergraduate) and research intensive Master’s degree (post-graduation).

Last week, Delhi University released a draft undergraduate curriculum framework 2022 (UGCF-2022), formulated in accordance with the NEP, and sought feedback from stakeholders including students, parents and academicians.

The recent announcement by the university is in accordance with the decision taken during a meeting in August last year, where it was decided that the existing M.Phil. A programme run in various Departments of the University of Delhi will be discontinued from the academic year 2022- 23 in line with the NEP 2020.

Last year Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) also announced to scrap MPhil courses.

Delhi University plans to implement NEP 2020 from the academic year 2022-23 and the discontinuation of the existing M.Phil Programme is in line with the NEP 2020.

Students will be allowed direct admission to PhD after PG courses without giving MPhil. As per the NEP, undertaking a PhD shall require either a Master's degree or a four-year Bachelor's degree with Research. The MPhil programme shall be discontinued.

Delhi University has been offering MPhil and PhD programmes through its 52 departments. Last year, out of 52 departments, the vacant PhD and MPhil seats were declared in the 34 Departments. The total number of PhD seats on offer were 888 in these 34 departments while the total number of MPhil seats were 416 in these 34 departments.
