The Indian government has reiterated its stance on the existing provisions concerning the number of attempts and age limit for the Civil Services Examination (CSE). In response to queries in Parliament about additional attempts and age relaxation for the UPSC-Civil Services Examination, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, clarified that after thorough consideration, no modifications will be made to these existing provisions.
Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singari, a member of the YSR Congress Party in Parliament, sought clarification from the government regarding demands for additional attempts and age relaxation by candidates who appeared for the UPSC-CSE during the pandemic years. Dr. Singh responded by citing judgments from the Supreme Court, as well as insights from the related Parliamentary Standing Committee, affirming that despite these demands and discussions, altering the number of attempts and age limit for the CSE wasn't deemed feasible.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court, on February 20, dismissed the plea of Civil Services Examination aspirants who had approached the court seeking an extra attempt due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The court declined to intervene, suggesting that this was a matter for the government to decide as a policy matter. The petitioners argued for an additional attempt, pointing out that candidates in other recruitment exams, such as the SSC and Agniveer, were granted extra attempts due to the pandemic. However, the Supreme Court upheld its decision, emphasizing that the government should determine any such policy changes regarding the UPSC CSE attempts.
