Tripura University started as a Post-Graduate Wing of Calcutta University in 1976 and then became a full-fledged state university in 1987. In 2007, Tripura University became the Central University. At present, there are forty-four departments, two faculties, and four Centres of Study along with the four departments under the Directorate of Distance Education.
