One of the oldest established universities in South India spread over 1000 acres, came into existence on January 1, 1929.
It was founded by Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar, a philanthropist and visionary.
It was founded with the sole purpose of promoting theTamil Language and Literature for which the founder united three already established institutions.
In the year 1928, Rajah Sir S. RM. Annamalai Chettiar handed over three of his founded institutions (in the early 1920s), Sri Minakshi College, Sri Minakshi Tamil College and Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College to make a University.

Annamalai University facilitates several events and activities for the students. These events are organised to provide exposure and industry experience within the walls of the campus. The University has various clubs and schemes that the students can be a part of, such as the National Service Scheme (NSS Cell), wherein, the students learn social service skills and various other soft skills.
