The selection for most of the courses is based on merit of the aspirants in the last qualifying exam. The university may accept entrance exam for admission to a few courses.

Candidates need to pass a minimum of Class 12 to apply for I.K Gujral Punjab Technical University UG courses. The aggregate will depend of the course opted by the aspirants. However, the minimum aggregate for UG courses ranges between 45%-50%. Hence, aspirants with 60% in Class 12 have a good of getting admission in the university. Aspirants need to pay a non-refundable application fee of INR 2,000 to register for a course at I.K Gujral Punjab Technical University (PTU). Candidates can pay the fee via any of the online payment modes. Once paid, aspirants must keep the fee receipt with them for future reference.

There is only PG which is available nearer to this university in which the college staffs stays, it is not for girls, generally most of students stay in the college hostel because it has very less hostel fee. Also in kapurthala which is nearly 4-5kms from the university, there are two-three PGs available which is better to stay. But no one from our college lives there, if some one don't want to stay in hostel either they are local or they take a flat/apartment. 

IK Gujral Punjab Technical University offers scholarships to meritorious and financially-weak students. Aspirants pursuing a course from the university can apply for the scholarship. Below is the criteria:

• Top 10% of students enrolled under same batch for all disciplines/ streams are offered scholarships of 50% of the tuition fee
• Next 20% students Top 10% of students admitted under same batch for all disciplines are offered scholarships of 25% of the tuition fee

IKGPTU, earlier known as Punjab Technical University was established under Act of the State Legislature in 1997. The university affiliates 120+ AICTE and 65 UGC-approved colleges. The university offers 25+ courses at its main campus. Candidates can go for the university as it offers a wide range of courses and practical knowledge to the students. It uses new techniques and methods to teach students in modern and innovative ways. It also has received a mandate to start Centres of Excellence to help students to grow in research, development and their training.
