JMI University was established in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh on October 29, 1920.
The university was established after the demands from the Aligarh Muslim University's students to have a new National Muslim University, free from the influence of the British Government.
Many eminent Indian personalities such as Zakir Hussain (Former President of India) and Mahatma Gandhi (Father of the Nation), also supported the establishment of JMI University.
Mahatma Gandhi also sent his youngest son, Devdas Gandhi to teach Hindi at the university.
Jamia Millia Islamia moved from Aligarh to Karol Bagh, New Delhi, in 1925.
In 1936, all the institutions of the university, except a few moved to the new campus of the university, in Jamia Nagar, Delhi.
The UGC recognised it as a deemed university in 1962.
Jamia Millia Islamia finally received the status of a 'Central University' by an act of the Parliament in 1988.
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia visited the university in 2006 and donated USD 30 million for the construction of a library and a research centre.
