A:

One of the most desired and recognised degrees for dentists (doctors) is BDS. The sole academic and professional dental surgery programme in India is the BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery). It shares the "Dr" domain with the MBBS and is equal.

An oral health care professional who diagnoses and treats conditions is a Dentist. BDS is for Bachelor of Dental Surgery, whereas MDS stands for Master of Dental Surgery.

The 5-year undergraduate BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) programme is India's sole recognised professional dental course. Following the BDS programme, students graduate as doctors. Students who want to become dentists at public or private hospitals must take this course. The primary objectives of the BDS are to educate and familiarise students with the dental sciences and procedures. 4 years of classroom instruction and 1 year of required rotational internship make up the 5-year programme.

Master of Dental Surgery is the full name for MDS. MDS is a dental master's degree programme. Students with a degree in Dental Science can continue on to a BDS programme to gain a thorough understanding of Dental studies. Three years make up the MDS. The Dental Council of India (DCI) has approved the MDS programme, which is available in several specialisations.

Q:   Is BDS course very hectic?

A:

Yes, the BDS course (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) can be considered hectic due to its demanding curriculum and rigorous training requirements.

  • Intensive Study: The BDS course usually has subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, among others. Information to be learned within this little time is voluminous.
  • Clinical Training: BDS students are extensively trained clinically. Under the guidance of experienced faculty members, BDS students undergo practice for treating patients.
  • Working Hours: Dental education is often associated with long hours for study, lab procedures, and clinical practices. Clinics, lectures, labs, and exam preparations make sure that most students are likely to remain busy.
  • Examinations and Assessments: Assessment of the students pursuing the BDS course is done through periodical assessments, practical examinations, and written tests. Preparation for, and performance in, these evaluations involves workload and stress.
  • Clinical Rotations: Dental students are normally required to serve clinical rotations in the different specialities of dentistry quite often. This equates to working in different departments in a dental hospital or clinic.

Q:   Is BDS considered a doctor degree?

A:

Yes, a BDS course is considered a professional doctorate in the field of dentistry.

Individuals who complete the BDS course are known as dentists or dental surgeons. While they may not be medical doctors (i.e., physicians), dentists are doctors in the sense that they hold a doctoral-level degree in their field and are licensed healthcare professionals trained to diagnose and treat oral health issues.

They are qualified to perform various dental procedures, including dental examinations, fillings, extractions, root canals, and other treatments related to oral health and hygiene.
