We Focus on Hands-On Learning Experiences, says Chandigarh University Institute of Architecture Principal

In a conversation with Shiksha.com, Swati Behl Uppal, Principal University Institute of Architecture talks about the Architecture Department's curriculum which is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of architecture.

Swati Behl Uppal has a degree of Master in Planning with a specialization in Environmental Planning from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. Prof. Swati has an experience of 22 years with a good amalgamation of both working in the field and academics. Her research interests include urban planning, urban design, built environment and spatial planning, urban land use and policy. 

 

Q1. What inspired you to pursue a career in architecture, and how did you end up in your current role as Principal of the Architecture Department at Chandigarh University?

 As a girl I was taught to be smart and independent and so I knew I would like to make a professional career from the very beginning of my teenage years. Since I always had a bent of mind towards creativity and an eye for aesthetics. I was looking for a course which could be scientific with blend of creativity to satisfy my intellectual and artistic needs. Having grown in Chandigarh, the city beautiful this further invigorated how I started envisioning the built form with respect to landscaped areas. As, I took my first leap to an architectural college very soon I understood that a degree in architecture can give me wide range of openings to pursue further. The career range could be vast from engaging as an interior designer, landscape architect, conversationist, planner etc. I chose to do my further studies in Planning and worked on projects related to environmental planning.

Q:   Is Chandigarh University good?

A:

Chandigarh University is a good university. It is a private university that is accredited by NBA and with an A+ Grade by the NAAC. In addition to this, CU is approved by UGC, AICTE, BCI, NCHMCT, PCI, COA, NCTE, AIU, and CSI. As per the latest placement report, 858 recruiters participated in the placement process and placed 9,124 students of batch 2023 in new-age job roles. The highest domestic and international packages offered during Chandigarh University placement 2023 stood at INR 170 LPA and INR 54.75 LPA, respectively.

Q:   Is Chandigarh University good for BTech?

A:

As per NIRF 2024 rankings, CU is ranked 32 under the 'Engineering' category and managed to improve its position from the last year's ranking, which was 45 in the year 2022. CU has set records for engineering education & is ranked among the Best Engineering Colleges in Punjab, India.

The students pursuing BTech from the university get excellent placement offers. Q:   Is MCA available at Chandigarh University?

A:

Yes, Chandigarh University offers a full-time MCA course for a duration of two years. This course is offered across four specialisations, which is inclusive of two International Tie-up Programme (ITP) at international level. Students can pursue MCA in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning and Cloud Computing & DevOps at the university's campus. Further, the international programmes are MCA - ITP (Study in USA) and MCA - Cloud Computing and DevOps (ITP), where students can study a part of their course in international universities.

Having a passion for teaching I took up a job as an assistant professor in a architectural college besides doing my architectural projects. Teaching was noble and satisfying profession as it empowered me to channelise the young energetic minds of upcoming architects into creative designers. With the experience of 22 years as I grew in my career, I realised that besides being a good teacher, having a vision to take the profession to a higher level in terms of making professionals with critical problem-solving capabilities efficiently and effectively, an administrative role could help. My hard work and perseverance have enabled me to take on greater responsibility.

Here are some examples that illustrate how this approach prepares students for success: The department organizes field trips to different cities and towns in India, exposing students to diverse cultural and architectural landscapes. In one of the department's recent design competitions, students were tasked with designing a sustainable community center. They were provided with real-world constraints, such as limited space, and had to work within a strict budget. The department have around 25% practicing architects, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the classroom straight from the industry. One of the most significant changes is the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). By embracing this policy, the department is promoting a multidisciplinary approach to learning and providing more flexibility in course selection. For instance, students now have the option to choose courses from other departments, such as business or engineering, which will broaden their knowledge and skill set. The department is integrating technology and practical skills into its curriculum, which will prepare students for the demands of the 21st century. Another exciting development is the integration of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) into the curriculum. Technical skills, such as knowledge of design principles and construction methods, are crucial, as are creative skills that allow architects to think innovatively and conceptually. And let's not forget about the interpersonal skills, such as communication, collaboration, and leadership, which are essential in the field of architecture.

We recognize the importance of developing these skills in our students. That's why our curriculum is designed to provide a balance between theory and practical skills, with a strong emphasis on hands-on experience. We encourage our students to participate in design competitions, workshops, and internships to gain real-world experience and develop their creative skills. But it's not just about technical and creative skills; we also prioritize communication and collaboration skills, recognizing that architects must work effectively with others to bring their designs to life.
