Mystory@Tanveer Khan: How I selected my course and college
When we are young, most of us aspire to become doctors, engineers, lawyer, scientists etc. We are so determined to achieve our goals and ambitions. But for majority of guys like me, it’s with the introduction of algebra, trigonometry and mathematics, when the big dreams begin to get shattered and I can bet the aspiring population of future doctors and engineering comes down by half in class 8th itself!
I don’t know why there is a need to introduce abc in mathematics! So when I was in class 9th, we had this mathematics paper in which I scored 40 out of 100. In Science we had all three subjects combined – Physics – the prodigal brother of Math, Chemistry – the sister, and Biology – not from this family. So out of 100, I scored full marks in Biology, failed in Physics and managed a decent score in Chemistry and my combined score was 50 out of 100. My Biology teacher was very happy with my performance in his subject and in class 10th he asked me to take Science in 11-12th. But then I revealed the reason for not taking Science and he understood my problem. I did not want to spoil my 12th Board marks.
I decided to take Commerce because of my dreams and my aspiration to help my dad in his business. I never thought of joining Christ University; I had just heard that it’s a good college for Commerce students, but again who cares, we were 70 in one class and majority were eyeing DU. So while getting away from friends was hard, everyone was filling application forms of various colleges as their contingency plan. So I researched and found out that Christ University is the best for BBA and it offered business knowledge + tourism course. I thought of applying for this so that I could help my dad to develop our resort in Jaisalmer. I gave my interview and within hours I was told that I am selected for the course. And once you are selected, the admission process has to be done within 5 days. I became scared and wanted some advice so I called my senior friends and talked to them who were in Delhi University (DU), some were in Hindu College, Hansraj, Ramjas etc. They were more like brothers because I have spent 12 years with them in school so they advised me if you are confident that you will get into SRCC only then you consider DU otherwise Christ is better in terms of personal development, corporate image, and it follows a strict schedule that helps bring in a disciplined approach to academics. So I decided to stay in Christ University and got my admission.
How I cracked admission
Generally, admission for normal BBA and BBA FIB happens through entrance test, GD and personal interview but for BBA Tourism and Travel Management at Christ University all you need to give is personal interview and for that all you need is confidence, good communication skills, general awareness and knowledge about what you studied in your class 11th-12th. For this, I just took two weeks of personality development classes with my friends in Jaipur and that’s all I did to crack admission because I have a habit to reading newspaper daily for almost one hour and I am good at my subjects of Commerce i.e. Accountancy, Economics and Business Studies. I did not wear formal clothes even when it was clearly written on instructions that you are required to come in formals, but a good interview can cover such mistakes. They will ask about your favourite subject or the subject which you were strong in, and ask questions around that in the interview, so that’s very helpful.
Earlier I was just focused on getting into DU and stay in North India, so that I could easily go home whenever I wanted and have no attendance tension. But then it was time to get serious about life’s decisions. So after consulting friends, I made my decision of joining Christ University and I’m glad I made that choice.
College life: Classes, extra-curricular activities and more
My college starts at 8:30 in the morning and we have 6 hours of classes and activity class. Every semester we have a compulsory holistic education class once a week, around 3-4 compulsory library hours, 3 project hours, 2 skill development classes and 2 current affairs classes in a week and rest all classes are related to course subjects.
Every day I reach college by 8:15am, go to the canteen and have 2eggs and a cup of coffee or tea. Professor will be there by 8:35, he/she will take attendance through an app and submit it online, and it gets updated immediately. After every 1st hour, the college’s most awaited and favourite break comes and i.e. breakfast break of 12 minutes and trust me this 12 minutes is a lottery to the canteen owners. The idea behind this break is to cater to most of the students who come in a rush and skip their breakfast. After this we have 3 hours of classes with 5 min breaks in between each. Lunch hour is 12:30-1:30pm and the whole canteen gets flooded with students. Some eat at college canteens and few go to nearby malls and restaurants. The pattern goes like this for everyone including me that if it’s the beginning of the month the nearby Dominos, McDonald’s, KFC would be crowded and by the end of the month, it’s the college canteen or the local eatery where the crowd is; and everyone knows why this happens as there is something we all call “broke scenes”.
For me holistic education is about general things like moral values and principles, and I get bored in this hour but being a Christite it’s important because it’s your main ticket for the end semester exam. Without clearing this you don’t get hall ticket. Current affairs is again a part of it, it’s boring. But I love skill development because students fRom other class come to attend this and in this class unique topics and subjects are taught, they just go through their slides and we play games. I always wait for Accountancy hour as my professor thinks that I am the only one she has hope for scoring better. There are some young professors who always have something good to share with us and they understand us better.
Christ is a very happening college throughout the year as it has some or the other events, almost 200+ events or seminars in a year, and everyday some students invite all others to come and take part or be part of the audience and cheer them. We have clubs like SWO (Student Welfare Organization) they are in charge of organizing all the events, and maintaining discipline during events. I am also a member of SWO so I can be called at any time and since my friend is head of SWO he always helps me bunk classes. We also have CSA (Centre for Social Activities), these guys organise village trips and fairs promoting the products of farmers, creating awareness, seminars for women and other social activities.
The best is organizing a fest every semester; there is a mega fest of each department so if you are chosen take it as the best thing, like I was a senior head of food and beverages and all I had to do was taste food and get quotation from vendors who could provide food in the fest. I was event head of a competition where all my extra time was utilized in preparing for the event and currently I am senior OC (organizing committee) of transportation and logistics for the international inter-collegiate fest which will be on 6-7 March. So it’s like if you are interested and keen to take responsibility you will never be bored, you will have work to do, you will make lots and lots of friends and time goes by smoothly.
All this has influenced my life and helped me gain best of the best skills. I am much more confident and knowledgeable person and yes, the decision of joining Christ University was absolutely right.
