Bachelor of Computer Applications or BCA is a graduate-level course that introduces candidates to the field of Computer Applications. The course deals with the principles of programming, software and hardware, and other important aspects of securing and managing computer systems. It is a highly popular course, especially amongst candidates who wish to make a career in the field of Information Technology. After BTech in CS and IT, this course is highly in demand amongst students who have completed Class 12th. This course is offered by most of the private and government colleges in India. Computer Applications is offered across various levels such as Diploma(PGDCA), Undergraduate(BCA) or Postgraduate(MCA) and Doctoral(Ph.D).
Admissions to this course are either done on the basis of marks scored in the qualifying exam which is Class 12th board examination or the entrance examination which is conducted by few universities such as GGSIPU, Symbiosis University, Lovely Professional University etc. These colleges conduct their own separate entrance examination and admit students on the basis of marks scored and counselling process. Other universities open applications after the declaration of the central and state board examination results. There are more than 2800 colleges which offer BCA courses. Some of these colleges offer full-time or part-time courses in BCA. Admissions to part-time courses are done on the basis of a centralised application process of the concerned university such as IGNOU through Samarth Portal.

Q. Can one pursue MCA after completing PGDCA?
A. Definitely, one can pursue MCA after completion of PGDCA since PGDCA is diploma level course which can be pursued only after completing BCA. It is suggested to candidates that if they want to specialise in a particular branch of computer applications, then they must surely pursue MCA directly and not waste their time in PGDCA. Hence candidates can maximise their knowledge and improve their skills by pursuing MCA
Q. Can I get BCA admission through KCET?
A. No, you cannot get BCA admission through KCET in India. KCET (Karnataka Common Entrance Test) is specifically designed for admission to engineering and related streams like pharmacy, agriculture, and veterinary science in Karnataka state government colleges. BCA does not fall under these categories and has its own admission process involving different entrance exams or merit-based selection based on Class 12 marks.
Q. Do non-medical students get more preference for BCA admission than commerce students?
A. No, generally non-medical and commerce students have equal weightage for BCA admissions. Most colleges consider Class 12 marks or entrance exam scores for selection, regardless of your stream. Some colleges might have specific subject requirements, but these typically include Math and English, which both streams cover.
Focus on maximizing your scores and meeting eligibility criteria, not your stream, for optimal BCA admission chances.
Q. What is the BCA placement percentage and fresher salary?
A. BCA placement percentage varies widely depending on colleges, location, and industry trends. Estimates range from 30-70 percent. Fresher salary also fluctuates, averaging between INR 1.5 - 3 LPA but reaching 4-5 LPA for top institutions and high performers.
Remember, individual results always vary. Focus on honing your skills and building a strong portfolio to maximize your placement potential.
Q. Is BCA better than Btech in terms of salary?
A. B.Tech graduates generally have a higher salary ceiling compared to BCA graduates. This is because the B.Tech curriculum is more rigorous and in-depth, focusing on the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering. This deeper understanding opens doors to more specialized and higher-paying roles in fields like software development, machine learning, and robotics.
However, BCA graduates still earn respectable salaries, especially in entry-level positions. The focus on application-oriented skills like programming and web development makes them well-suited for jobs like web developer, software tester, and system analyst.
Q. Does BCA have good placement?
A. BCA placements can be good, but it depends on several factors like college reputation, specialization, and individual skills. Top colleges with strong industry connections often have good placement records, with graduates securing jobs in IT firms with starting salaries of INR 3-6 LPA.
However, placements may vary for lesser-known colleges or less in-demand specializations. Ultimately, your skills and performance play a big role in securing a good placement.
