Q:   Is M.Sc. at NIT Jamshedpur a good choice?

    A:
    {Source: M.Sc. students & alumni}

Here's a summary of the pros and cons of pursuing M.Sc. at NIT Jamshedpur:

    Pros:

    * Excellent faculty: Faculty members are helpful, and their teaching quality is good. Most professors hold a Post-Doc degree in their respective subjects and are well-qualified.
    * Research-oriented curriculum: The course design focuses on preparing students for higher studies (Ph.D.) and research, making it ideal for those interested in pursuing advanced degrees.
    * Good infrastructure: The campus offers modern facilities such as air-conditioned classrooms, libraries with Wi-Fi, and single-occupancy hostels with amenities like lifts, Wi-Fi, and furniture.
    * Decent placements: Although the placement record might not be exceptional, students receive decent offers from companies like EdTech, Physics Wallah, and others, with average packages ranging from INR6-12 Lacs per annum.
    * Festivals and extracurricular activities: The college hosts various festivals and has multiple societies for extracurricular activities, providing opportunities for students to develop their interests outside academics.

    Cons:

    * Limited industry connections: As mentioned by several students, the college receives mostly educational background companies, and industrial background companies rarely visit the campus.
    * No placements in Chemistry department: Unfortunately, the college doesn't seem to focus on recruitment in the Chemistry department, resulting in limited placement opportunities for students in this field.
    * High competition: With over 90% of students getting placed from the college, competition for limited slots can be intense.
    * Average hostel food: Students reported that the hostel food was not great, especially for North Indians who had to adapt to the local cuisine.

In conclusion, while NIT Jamshedpur's M.Sc. programme has its strengths, such as excellent faculty and infrastructure, it may not be the best fit for everyone due to limitations in industry connections and placements. However, for those interested in pursuing higher studies or research, it could be a suitable option.

    College review of NIT Jamshedpur.
Placements: Mainly, educational background companies come to this college. In my batch, up to January 2024, no industrial background companies come to this college, but TCS comes to this college. Unfortunately, up to January 2024, in my batch, no one got placement. The college does not focus on recruitment in the Chemistry department.
Infrastructure: Classrooms are fully air-conditioned. The college has a library where Wi-Fi is available. Hostels for M.Sc are seven-storied buildings. A lift is available for these hostels. All rooms have single beds. Wi-Fi is also available in hostels. All rooms have one chair, one table, one bed and all the necessary things like lights, fans, etc.
Faculty: Faculty members are helpful. Their teaching quality is also very good. But this college has only one teacher for Physical Chemistry. The course design is not friendly to national exams like NET and GATE. Semester exams are quite difficult, but no one failed in any semester in my batch.

    College Review of NIT Jamshedpur.
Placements: When discussing placements and internships, our class strength is 32, out of which 4-5 students secure an internship, as they are interested. Regarding placements, 5-6 students opt for placement. The packages range between 6 and 12 lakhs per annum. The top recruiting companies are PW, Akash, and mainly Edtech.
Infrastructure: The facilities are excellent. The campus is full of Wi-Fi, and single occupancy hostels are provided to every student. Speaking of department facilities, they are also top-notch. Every teacher is highly qualified. The classrooms are fully air-conditioned, and the labs are equipped with every necessary equipment. The library remains open 24*7.
Faculty: Speaking about the teachers, each one is highly qualified, holding a Post-Doc in their respective subjects. They teach thoroughly and with a clear concept. The courses are designed by the teachers and are oriented towards higher studies, as many students prefer to pursue further studies. In every semester, there are two exams, which are at a standard level.
Other: Since I am interested in pursuing higher studies after my B.Sc., I chose this course. My main interest is in research, so I plan to pursue M.Sc. and Ph.D. Regarding improvements, there should be an increase in the number of papers, rather than an increase in the topics covered in the syllabus. The fest is one of the best I have seen. There are 6-10 fests every year at a grand level. Additionally, there are many societies for extracurricular activities.

Satisfied with the campus life having decent placements and good higher education.
Placements: Placements are quite decent for M.Sc. students. Generally, the companies invited are that of coaching institutes which may be a startup or a recognised institution. Overall, the average package of a selected candidate is around 7-8 LPA. It is also a decent college if you want to go for higher education.
Infrastructure: Hostel food was the worst, it won't be good in taste, if you are a North Indian, you will have to surrender to the food quality. The best thing was that you get allotted a single room in the hostel, but hygiene is not maintained in the rooms as well as in the washrooms. Infrastructure of our course is decent, they don't take much interest in it.
Faculty: It is not difficult to pass the exams of the semesters. The questions are made from within the syllabus. Faculty of the course is decent and not very good. If you want to pass the exams, it can be done by studying a night before the exams. Some of the teachers are good in nature while the rest take everything for granted.

Review of Chemistry department, NIT Jamshedpur.
Placements: Talking about placement, very few students got placement. Others prefer to go higher studies and teacher suggest students go for higher study. Many students prepare for NET, JRF, and GATE, and many join PSU, and some of them choose foreign countries for Ph.D.
Infrastructure: Infrastructure is now developing. The hostel building is new and the lecture theatre building is also new, with a capacity of 120 students. Every room has AC and a projector. Here, you will get a personal room in a hostel, along with a study table and almirah.
Faculty: Talking about course design. It is designed very well, and here in every semester there will be two time exams: one mid-semester and another end-semester exam. The lab is also good. Teachers have deep knowledge of there respective subjects. You can ask questions at any time.
Other: I chose chemistry because I like it and I want to do higher studies in chemistry. There are many society fest programmes here, and the crowd is large.

    Teachers are not satisfactory.
Placements: There are different placements in department branches and courses, but overall placement is 80% and above. In the Physics Department, the highest salary package is 10 LPA and the lowest salary package is 5 LPA. Companies like Allen, Unacademy, PW, Aakash, etc., are among the recruiters. In edtech companies, there is almost zero percent internship, but a summer internship program is held for various Institutes of Physics, allowing students to go there and complete their internships in Physics, teaching, or data analysis.
Infrastructure: NIT Jamshedpur classrooms are spacious, well-maintained, and well-equipped. The entire campus is fully Wi-Fi enabled. Labs are located in the old building, but all lab equipment is available. Classrooms are fully air-conditioned and have Wi-Fi. The library is excellent, with all necessary facilities. Hostels are the best I have seen in any top-ranked college. The building is in great condition, and every student has their room. The food quality is also good, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options served. The college canteen is reliable and offers good food. Every student has medical insurance worth 5 lakhs. There is a small clinic for minor problems, which is free of charge. For major issues, students are taken to the best hospital in the city, and all expenses are reimbursed. There are numerous sports events throughout the year. Different types of sports are played in the college, and a competitive league called Urja, similar to the Olympics, is held every year.
Faculty: All teachers are very qualified, but I can't say every teacher is knowledgeable. Only three teachers have sufficient knowledge of their subject, and rest are just a burden on the students. If you are going to be admission to this NIT, please do some research before making a decision. The teaching faculty is not good. The course curriculum is also not ideal. As a Physics student, I feel there should be a programming language included, but they don't have enough skilled faculty to teach it. The difficulty of the exam is moderate. Students can pass easily if they just follow the notes provided by the teachers. A 35% score is required to pass the examination.
Other: I chose Physics because I like this subject, but in this institute, students may feel like they made a big mistake. However, don’t panic. If students want to achieve something, focus on self-learning. I hope there will be good and smart teachers in the future because, after two years, no knowledgeable professors will remain as most are retiring. Only arrogant and overconfident teachers will be left. There is no scholarship offered. The campus is open, and anyone can enter without permission. Surroundings have nothing except villages, giving you the feeling of living in one. A cultural fest is held once every year.
