What is Ampere?
Electrical Units of Measurement used for expressing standard electrical units. Any scientific measurement or quantity will be measured using SI (International System of Units) units.
Ampere
- The ampere(amp) is the base unit of electric current in the SI units. The symbol for ampere is A.
- Ampere comes from the study of magnetism. The name comes after a French mathematician and physicist, Andre-Marie Ampere.
- Ampere is defined as the current that flows with an electric charge of one coulomb per second.
1A =1C/s
- The International System of Units defines the ampere in terms of other base units by measuring the electromagnetic force between electrical conductors carrying electric current.
- One ampere is the electric current corresponding to the flow of 1/(1.602 176 634 x 10–19) elementary charges per second.

Milliampere
A milliamp (or milliampere) is a submultiple of the SI base unit of electric current, the ampere. The symbol for milliamp is mA. There are 1,000 milliamps in an amp.

Milliampere to Ampere for Class 10
Amperes and Milliamperes are the units of the electric current. The common terms you hear with ampere are ampere-hour, milliamp-hour, watts and volts. Mostly the questions from this topic are in the form of numerical problems. The weightage of this topic is less in comparison to the whole chapter.
Illustrated Examples
- A 350-volt bulb consumes 420 watts of power. How much current is drawn by it?
Answer: Current in amps = watts/volts = 420/350 = 1.2amps
- If the current consumed by a 70 wattage bulb is 5 amps. What will be the voltage of the bulb?
Answer: volts = 70/5 =14v
- A 4500-watt dryer runs for 4 hours a day, how many kWh does it consume and if electricity costs 15c per unit, what is the cost of running it?
Answer: kWh = watts/1000* time in hours
4500/1000*4 =18kWh
The cost of running = 15*18 =270c
