AFCAT 2025: The Indian Air Force released the AFCAT 1 2025 notification. The AFCAT 1 application form 2025 was available from December 2 to 31, 2024. The AFCAT 1 exam dates 2025 have been announced. The exam will be conducted from February 22 to 23, 2025. AFCAT 1 notification 2025 is made available in PDF form and comprises the details related to the exam. A total of 336 vacancies were announced for the AFCAT 1 2025 exam.

What is AFCAT Exam?

The Air Force Common Admission Test or AFCAT is conducted by the IAF to select Class-I Gazetted Officers in Flying and Ground Duties (Technical and Non-Technical). The exam is held twice a year, in February and August/September, respectively. AFCAT is one of the most sought-after defence exams where lakhs of candidates appear to join the Air Force Academy. To ace the AFCAT exam, candidates must prepare well by going through the exam pattern, syllabus, previous year question papers, and mock tests.

AFCAT is a gateway for both male and female candidates who wish to join the Indian Air Force for both Short Service Commission in Flying Branch and Permanent Commission/Short Service Commission in Ground Duties for both Technical and Non-Technical roles.

Candidates are selected based on their performance in the online exam and Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) interview. Candidates opting for Ground Duty (Technical) branches are required to appear in both AFCAT and Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT).

AFCAT Exam: Types of Commission

AFCAT exam is conducted for granting the following two types of commissions:

Permanent Commission (PC) for Men: Candidates joining as PC officers will serve till the age of superannuation in their respective branches as per their rank.

Short Service Commission (SSC) for Men & Women

  • The engagement period for Flying Branch (Men and Women) SSC Officers is 14 years from the date of Commissioning (Non-extendable)
  • The initial tenure for Ground Duty (Technical & Non-Technical) SSC Officers is for a period of ten years. An extension of four years may be granted subject to service requirements, availability of vacancies, willingness, suitability, and merit
  • Grant of Permanent Commission (PC) is considered during the last one year of service subject to service requirements, availability of vacancies, willingness, suitability, and merit

Q:   What is the difference between NDA and AFCAT?

The full form of AFCAT is Air Force Common Admission Test whereas the full form of NDA is National Defence Academy. Both exams are the sought-after defence entrance exams in the country. NDA exam is conducted by Union Public Service Commission to select candidates for admission to the Army, Navy and Air wings of NDA and Indian Naval Academy Courses. AFCAT exam is conducted to select candidates as Class 1 gazetted Officers in the flying branch and ground duty (Technical and Non-Technical) branches. NDA exam is conducted after Class 12 whereas AFCAT is conducted after graduation. The selection process of AFCAT comprises online test and AFSB interview. NDA selection process comprises written exam and SSB interview. Candidates after clearing NDA exam are required to first undergo training at the National Defence Academy after which they are sent to the respective defence academies as per their preferences for further training. Through AFCAT exam candidates are directly inducted into the Indian Air Force. There is also a difference in the exam pattern and syllabus of NDA and AFCAT. NDA exam pattern is such that it is divided into two papers-Maths and GAT. NDA exam is conducted offline and carries 900 marks. Q:   Is there any negative marking in AFCAT exam?

A:
Yes, there is a negative marking in AFCAT exam. For each wrong answer, one mark is deducted. For example, if a candidate attempts 20 questions from the Quant section and gets 18 questions correct but gets two questions incorrect. Then the candidate's score for this section will be calculated based on the formula 18x3-2, I. e. , 52. However, no marks are deducted for unanswered questions. Therefore, candidates must choose questions wisely basically the ones which they can answer correctly. Candidates should aim towards solving all the questions since there is a negative marking. They should solve questions that they are sure of. Candidates should also leave the questions that are time-taking. While answering questions, candidates should also take note of the time limit.

Q:   How many attempts are in AFCAT?

A:
There is no limit to the number of attempts the AFCAT exam. Candidates falling within the prescribed age limit can appear for the exam. As per AFCAT eligibility, applicants must be 20 to 24 years (at the time of commencement of course). The upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot License issued by DGCA (India) is relaxed up to 26 years (at the time of commencement of course).

There was no vacancy for Permanent Commission. Earlier, Permanent Commission vacancies were announced for male candidates. The initial tenure for Ground Duty (Technical & Non-Technical) SSC Officers would be for a period of ten years. An extension of four years may be granted subject to service requirements, availability of vacancies, willingness, suitability and merit. Grant of Permanent Commission (PC) (at a later date) would be considered subject to service requirements, availability of vacancies, willingness, suitability, merit and as per prevailing policies on the subject. SSC officers are not entitled for the grant of pension.

New Addition of Branch

IAF included one new branch in AFCAT exam. The weapon system branch was included and the total number of vacancies for this branch was two for women and 15 for men.

Meterology Branch Included in the Online Test of AFCAT

Candidates who applied for the Meteorology branch were required to appear for AFCAT online exam. Earlier, it was as part of the special entry.

No EKT Exam Conducted

EKT exam is not included in AFCAT exam. Earlier, EKT was the part of AFCAT exam. This is conducted for the Technical branch.

AFCAT Application Form 2025

AFCAT 1 application form 2025 was released online on December 2, 2024, on the official website. The application form of AFCAT is comprised of two parts. The online correction window for AFCAT is made available by IAF after the application process closes. Only two sections are editable, 'Fill Application Form' and 'Upload Document'. Using the correction window, candidates can edit the details such as Candidate's name, Father's name, Passport Size Photo, Signature, Thumb Impression. No other fields are editable. No extra fee is charged to make the changes in the application form. The facility for editing the application form can be done by candidates who register successfully and pay the application fee. Therefore, you can correct the photograph and not DOB. The admit card is issued to candidates based on the information provided by candidates in the application form. AFCAT Eligibility 2025

To be eligible for the AFCAT exam, candidates need to fulfil the criteria prescribed by IAF in terms of nationality, age limit, educational qualification, and physical standards. AFCAT eligibility criteria are given below:

AFCAT Selection Process

AFCAT selection process several stages. Starting from the release of notification till document verification and appointment is considered as AFCAT selection process. The complete process is given below:

Release of Application Form

Interested candidates need to fill the application form and pay the fees online. The application fee is INR 250 across all categories.

Issue of Admit Card

The admit card is released online on the official website. Candidates need to download their admit cards by logging with the required credentials.

Appearing in the Exam

AFCAT exam is conducted online and comprises questions from General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning, and Military Aptitude Test. The duration of the test is two hours and carries 300 marks. The EKT exam, conducted for Ground Duty (Technical) branch candidates, comprises questions from Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, and Electrical & Electronics Engineering. The duration of the test is 45 minutes and carries 150 marks.

Declaration of Result

The result is announced online. Candidates need to login with the required credentials to check the result. Based on the result of the online test, candidates are selected for the AFSB test.

Appearing in AFSB test

The AFSB interview is conducted in three stages. Stage I comprise the Officer Intelligence Rating Test along with Picture Perception and discussion test. Stage II comprises Psychological tests, Group Tests and Interview. Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) will be conducted for Flying Branch candidates.

Final Selection

The final selection of candidates is done based on the performance in the online test and AFSB test.

AFCAT Exam Pattern 2024

AFCAT Exam Pattern is such that it is divided into online tests and AFSB tests. All registered candidates are required to appear for the online test. The test comprises questions from General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning, and Military Aptitude Test. The EKT, which is conducted for the Technical branch candidates, comprises questions from Mechanical, Computer Science, and Electrical & Electronics.

The maximum marks allotted to AFCAT are 300. The test paper of EKT carries a total of 150 marks. The AFSB test is conducted in three stages. AFCAT Marking Scheme

IAF prescribes the marking scheme for AFCAT exam. The marks of candidates are calculated as per the marking scheme. The marking scheme of AFCAT exam is given below:

  • For correct answer, candidates score three marks
  • For incorrect answer, one mark is deducted
  • No marks are deducted for unattempted questions
  • Normalisation of marks is done to calculate the scores of candidates

Normalisation of Marks

AFCAT exam is conducted on multiple days and shifts. Normalisation of marks is done to adjust the difficulty level of the question paper. This process helps in maintaining transparency in the calculation of scores. In order to rationalise the marks scored by candidates appearing in different shifts objectively through a statistical method, normalisation scheme is being implemented as per the formula.

Q:   What are the admission in AFA?

A:
Candidates after admission in Air Force Academy will not be considered for any other commission. They are not permitted to appear for any interview or exam after they have finally selected for training at AFA. No request for withdrawal of candidature received from a candidate after they have submitted their applications is entertained under any circumstance. PAN Card, Aadhaar card and account in SBI/ Nationalized Bank is mandatory at the time of joining Air Force Academy (AFA). Use/possession of narcotics is banned. Candidate may be tested for presence of drugs in the body during Medicals and subsequently during training/ service career as an officer. If candidate is found to be using/ in possession of narcotics during any time of training/service career, candidate would be debarred from training /service as per extant policy.

Q:   What is the procedure of training of newly appointed Officers through AFCAT exam?

A:

Training of newly appointed officers is conducted at Air Force Academy Dundigal (Hyderabad). The duration of training for Flying and Ground Duty (Technical) Branches is 74 weeks and that of Ground Duty (Non-Technical) Branches is 52 weeks at Air Force Training Establishments. Candidates are advised to keep themselves in good physical condition to adapt to physical training at AFA that encompasses running, swimming, rope climbing and other forms of physical training in which they are required to undergo mandatory tests during the training. Candidates should keep themselves fit by following the below-mentioned routine: Running upto 4 kms in 5 minutes Skipping Push-ups & Sit-ups minimum 20 each Chin ups: 8 Rope Climbing: 3 to 4 meters Swimming (25 m).

Q:   How can I correct DOP, DOB and Photo in AFCAT form?

A:

The online correction window for AFCAT is made available by IAF after the application process closes. Only two sections are editable, 'Fill Application Form' and 'Upload Document'. Using the correction window, candidates can edit the details such as Candidate's name, Father's name, Passport Size Photo, Signature, Thumb Impression. No other fields are editable. No extra fee is charged to make the changes in the application form. The facility for editing the application form can be done by candidates who register successfully and pay the application fee. Therefore, you can correct the photograph and not DOB. The admit card is issued to candidates based on the information provided by candidates in the application form. To download the admit card, candidates need to enter the required details.
