AFCAT 2025: The Indian Air Force released the AFCAT 1 2025 notification. The AFCAT 1 application form 2025 was available from December 2 to 31, 2024. The AFCAT 1 exam dates 2025 have been announced. The exam will be conducted from February 22 to 23, 2025. AFCAT 1 notification 2025 is made available in PDF form and comprises the details related to the exam. A total of 336 vacancies were announced for the AFCAT 1 2025 exam.

What is AFCAT Exam?

The Air Force Common Admission Test or AFCAT is conducted by the IAF to select Class-I Gazetted Officers in Flying and Ground Duties (Technical and Non-Technical). The exam is held twice a year, in February and August/September, respectively. AFCAT is one of the most sought-after defence exams where lakhs of candidates appear to join the Air Force Academy. To ace the AFCAT exam, candidates must prepare well by going through the exam pattern, syllabus, previous year question papers, and mock tests.

AFCAT is a gateway for both male and female candidates who wish to join the Indian Air Force for both Short Service Commission in Flying Branch and Permanent Commission/Short Service Commission in Ground Duties for both Technical and Non-Technical roles.

Candidates are selected based on their performance in the online exam and Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) interview. Candidates opting for Ground Duty (Technical) branches are required to appear in both AFCAT and Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT).

AFCAT Exam: Types of Commission

AFCAT exam is conducted for granting the following two types of commissions:

Permanent Commission (PC) for Men: Candidates joining as PC officers will serve till the age of superannuation in their respective branches as per their rank.

Short Service Commission (SSC) for Men & Women

The engagement period for Flying Branch (Men and Women) SSC Officers is 14 years from the date of Commissioning (Non-extendable)
The initial tenure for Ground Duty (Technical & Non-Technical) SSC Officers is for a period of ten years. An extension of four years may be granted subject to service requirements, availability of vacancies, willingness, suitability, and merit
Grant of Permanent Commission (PC) is considered during the last one year of service subject to service requirements, availability of vacancies, willingness, suitability, and merit

Q: How difficult is AFCAT exam?

It is not that difficult to crack AFCAT if candidates follow the right strategy for preparation. Q: What is the difference between NDA and AFCAT?

The full form of AFCAT is Air Force Common Admission Test whereas the full form of NDA is National Defence Academy. Both exams are the sought-after defence entrance exams in the country. NDA exam is conducted by Union Public Service Commission to select candidates for admission to the Army, Navy and Air wings of NDA and Indian Naval Academy Courses. AFCAT exam is conducted to select candidates as Class 1 gazetted Officers in the flying branch and ground duty (Technical and Non-Technical) branches. NDA exam is conducted after Class 12 whereas AFCAT is conducted after graduation. The selection process of AFCAT comprises online test and AFSB interview. Q: Is there any negative marking in AFCAT exam?

Yes, there is a negative marking in AFCAT exam. For each wrong answer, one mark is deducted. For example, if a candidate attempts 20 questions from the Quant section and gets 18 questions correct but gets two questions incorrect. Then the candidate's score for this section will be calculated based on the formula 18x3-2, I. e. , 52. However, no marks are deducted for unanswered questions. Therefore, candidates must choose questions wisely basically the ones which they can answer correctly. Candidates should aim towards solving all the questions since there is a negative marking. There is no limit to the number of attempts the AFCAT exam. Candidates falling within the prescribed age limit can appear for the exam. As per AFCAT eligibility, applicants must be 20 to 24 years (at the time of commencement of course). IAF included one new branch in AFCAT exam. The weapon system branch was included and the total number of vacancies for this branch was two for women and 15 for men.

Meterology Branch Included in the Online Test of AFCAT

Candidates who applied for the Meteorology branch were required to appear for AFCAT online exam. Earlier, it was as part of the special entry.

No EKT Exam Conducted

EKT exam is not included in AFCAT exam. Earlier, EKT was the part of AFCAT exam. This is conducted for the Technical branch.

AFCAT selection process several stages. Starting from the release of notification till document verification and appointment is considered as AFCAT selection process. The complete process is given below:

Release of Application Form

Interested candidates need to fill the application form and pay the fees online. The application fee is INR 250 across all categories.

Issue of Admit Card

Appearing in the Exam

AFCAT exam is conducted online and comprises questions from General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning, and Military Aptitude Test. The duration of the test is two hours and carries 300 marks. The EKT exam, conducted for Ground Duty (Technical) branch candidates, comprises questions from Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, and Electrical & Electronics Engineering. Declaration of Result

Q: What is considered a good score in AFCAT exam?

To qualify AFCAT exam, it is ideal that candidates should secure a score between 140 and 160 marks out of 300. In 2022, AFCAT cut off was 157, whereas the cut off for EKT was 18. Candidates are required to secure equal to or more than the cut off marks to qualify the exam. For correct answer, candidates score three marks whereas one mark is deducted for wrong answers. The total marks of candidates are calculated based on the number of correct and incorrect answers. The normalisation formula is applied to calculate the score.

Candidates after admission in Air Force Academy will not be considered for any other commission. They are not permitted to appear for any interview or exam after they have finally selected for training at AFA. No request for withdrawal of candidature received from a candidate after they have submitted their applications is entertained under any circumstance. PAN Card, Aadhaar card and account in SBI/ Nationalized Bank is mandatory at the time of joining Air Force Academy (AFA). Use/possession of narcotics is banned. Candidate may be tested for presence of drugs in the body during Medicals and subsequently during training/ service career as an officer. If candidate is found to be using/ in possession of narcotics during any time of training/service career, candidate would be debarred from training /service as per extant policy.
