Q:   Did UPSC ask analytical questions in IAS prelims 2023?

A:

Yes, the UPSC asked conceptual and analytical questions in the IAS prelims exam in 2023. The CSAT paper tested analytical skills, reasoning ability, and aptitude. The questions included permutations and combinations and analytical reasoning.

The difficulty level of the exam was moderate. The paper was lengthy because it included statement-based questions. The questions were a mix of static and current affairs. The majority of the questions were from Environment and Geography.

The CSAT was more difficult than previous years. Students with Science and IIT backgrounds found the exam tough.

IAS Exam Analysis 2021

UPSC conducted the IAS prelims 2021 exam on October 10. The exam was scheduled to be conducted on June 4, but it was postponed because of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in April. The UPSC paper was a balanced one, but the questions from Ancient History spelt surprise this year.

Following its pattern to test the conceptual clarity of the candidates, IAS prelims 2021 questions were also conceptual and applied in orientation. Practice with the mock test papers helps the candidates to answer such questions. UPSC always asks application-based questions, and this is the reason that the cut-off is declining in recent years.

One candidate, Dr Saurabh, told Shiksha.com that the paper followed the typical UPSC pattern as he was appearing for the third time in the IAS prelims exam. UPSC asked the conceptual questions in the paper and a large number of questions from the Art and Culture section of the Ancient History part was a surprise element for him. Environment and Ecology questions were less than compared in the past. The questions were multi-disciplinary in orientation.

Arshad Ali told that the paper was concept based. There is no place for fact-based questions in the IAS prelims exam. There were a good number of questions from Current Affairs.

Sumant Kumar Patra told us that the questions from the Culture part were more in number compared to previous years. There was a good mix of questions from all the sections. The candidates who studied the fundamentals can score better on the exam.

Jubain Hussain told Shiksha.com that the questions asked in the paper were only conceptual and a deep understanding was required to answer the questions.

All the candidates told us that the paper was bit more difficult in comparison to the previous years and hence we can say that the IAS prelims cutoff will be lower.
