Mystory@Bhanvi Satija: How I selected my course and college
I was a student of Humanities in class 11th and 12th. A major reason for choosing my subjects, was my sheer interest in the Social Sciences since my high school years. While I was able to perform well in all subjects, concepts of Mathematics and Science were always extremely hard and unappealing to me. Moreover, as an active student in the field of writing, editing and public speaking I felt like humanities was the right choice for me.
Similarly, when choosing a course for my under-graduation, my preferences were Law and Journalism. For law, I couldn’t get through any of the good colleges due to the competitive nature of the entrance exam. However, for Journalism, I received admission at Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College for Women, Delhi through my board exam results. Journalism was a choice because it offered me the opportunity to study multiple subjects and not specialise in one. Moreover, it was a professional course, which basically meant I could work after my undergrad.
Since my top options were law and journalism, I only took coaching classes and gave entrance exams for Law. I took classes for two months at the IMS Centre in Pitampura, and gave AILET and CLAT entrance exams. However, I could not score a good rank in either of the papers and hence, had to move to my second preferred course of Journalism. When my board results came out, I had scored a 96% and was sure that I would be able to get through a good college for my undergraduate studies. I received admission at LSR for Journalism in the second cut-off list, as I received a two percent disadvantage for not having a media or communication related subject in high school. In the first cut off, I had secured admission for English Hons at Jesus and Mary College, however, I was not very satisfied with the course. Therefore, I shifted to Journalism as soon as I made through the cut-off at LSR. The reputation of the college and its faculty played a very important role in my decision to study here.
What I gained from my college years
I spend time with my friends in college, and also by visiting the library often. I attend all my classes unless we have a practical assignment like a video or audio documentary for which we have to miss our tutorial classes with due permission. I am mostly part of extra-curricular activities which relate to my field, i.e. writing. I am part of the college magazine team, and I work as the Community Editor of Campus Watch, Youth ki Awaaz (a citizen journalism based website).
If given a chance, I would want to stay near my college as it takes me about two hours of one way travel. Once I have more time on hand, I would like to be part of the performing societies in college like the Dramatics Society, the Elocution society or the Dance Society. As a person, my college has had a deep impact on me. I have learnt the values of Feminism and Libertarianism at my college, and that has made a huge difference between the kind of person I was two years ago and who I am today. Moreover, the passionate culture to change how the world works, which is present in my college, has triggered in me the passion to change the world through my contribution in the field of journalism. Added to all of this, I have become a voracious reader after coming to LSR.
