TANCET exam is conducted in one shift for MBA and MCA admission. However, CEETA PG, formerly known as TANCET MTech, has several streams with question variation for one of its section. The examination authorities will convert the raw score secured by CEETA candidates into a normalized score to bring uniformity in the evaluation process. Read on to know the process of normalization of the TANCET score.

TANCET Normalisation Process

TANCET 2023 Normalisation Process

TANCET 2023 was conducted over a window of one day in two slots, i.e. one for MBA and other for MCA. The TANCET 2023 result has been released on April 14. Along with the scorecard, the examination authority also releases a rank list based on candidates' normalized scores. Normalization of TANCET scores is done to assess a candidate’s performance in the TANCET exam based on common parameters. The TANCET normalisation process brings uniformity to the overall evaluation process. Here we have explained the TANCET normalization process in detail, the formula, parameters determining ranks, and the tie-breaking policy.

Key Update: For the current exam session, TANCET 2023, Anna University conducted the exam in one shift. Therefore, normalisation process is not adopted for TANCET 2023.

Why is TANCET Normalization Process Needed?

TANCET 2023 question paper for ME/ MTech/ MArch / MPlan programmes consists of three parts- Part I (Engineering Mathematics), Part II (Basic Engineering & Sciences) and Part III (meant for different disciplines). The question paper for these programmes will have two common parts, Part I and Part II whereas Part III will be distinct and subject-specific. Upon evaluation, the average marks may vary from discipline to discipline under Part III. To minimise the effect of this variation, the examining authority calculates a normalized score from the actual score by applying a unique formula.

Typically, the TANCET schedule is released in the late week of December or in the early weeks of January. Candidates must keep track of the TANCET official website for dates and the latest exam details. Besides the official website, candidates find the TANCET schedule on the Shiksha's TANCET dates webpage. (https://www.shiksha.com/mba/tancet-exam-dates). .

How does TANCET Normalization Work?

The marks secured by candidates in all three sections (Part I, Part II and Part III) of TANCET are summed up to arrive at a raw score. The TANCET normalization process involves the raw score of candidates, the mean and standard deviation of raw marks across disciplines under Part III. The mean value is easily calculated by taking an average of marks of Part I, Part II and Part III whereas standard deviation is derived by assessing the difficulty level of questions in Part III.

The formula used for converting raw marks into normalized marks-

N= 40 (10/S) (R– M)

S= Standard deviation

R= Raw marks

M= Mean marks

N= Normalized score

Factors Determining TANCET Ranks

A candidate's TANCET rank is  arrived at by taking into consideration the following factors:

  • Total number of test-takers
  • Exam difficulty level
  • Maximum score
  • Normalized score

Tie-Breaking policy for merit ranking in TANCET

If the normalized score of two or more candidates is similar in TANCET 2023, then the merit list and ranks will be decided on the basis of candidates’ performance in the qualifying degree examination (Graduation). The one with a higher percentage will be awarded a higher rank in the overall cut off list.
