Some of the historical facts about Anna University:
- Anna University was established on 4th September 1978 as a unitary type of university. The university was named after Late Dr C.N. Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
- In 2001, Anna University was converted to an affiliating type University which brings together all the Engineering colleges in the State of Tamil Nadu.
- On 1st February 2007, the university was split into six constituent universities: Anna University, Chennai; Anna University of Technology, Chennai; Anna University of Technology, Tiruchirappalli; Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore; Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli and Anna University of Technology, Madurai. The institute was formally created in 2010.
- On 14 September 2011 during the period of Ex CM Jayalalitha, a bill was passed to re-merge the universities. In 2011 and 2012 the constituent colleges were merged back to a single affiliating university.
