Q:   How much percentile is a good score in CAT exam?

A:

The CAT (Common Admission Test) is a highly competitive entrance exam for admission to various management programs offered by top business schools in India. The percentile score in CAT exam is based on the relative performance of the test taker compared to all the other test takers.

The cutoff percentile for admission to top business schools varies from year to year and also depends on factors such as the number of candidates, difficulty level of the exam, and the number of available seats. In general, a percentile score of 90 or above is considered a good score and can help you secure admission to some of the top business schools in India. However, to increase your chances of admission to the top-tier business schools, a percentile score of 95 or above is preferred.

Q:   Is only CAT score a factor for admission in IIMs?

A:
No, CAT (Common Admission Test) score is not the only factor considered for admission to the Indian Institutes of Management (Iims). While the CAT score is an important factor, it is just one of the several components that are evaluated in the selection process. The selection process for Iims typically involves several stages, which may include: CAT score: The first stage of the selection process is the CAT exam. Candidates who meet the cutoff score set by the IIMS are shortlisted for the next stage. Written Ability Test: The What is a written test that evaluates a candidate's ability to communicate effectively in written form. This stage tests a candidate's writing skills and analytical ability. Group Discussion GD In the GD stage, candidates are divided into groups and given a topic to discuss. This stage tests a candidate's ability to work in a team and communicate effectively. Personal Interview PI- The PI stage evaluates a candidate's overall personality, communication skills, work experience, academic background, and other factors. Academic Record: The academic record of a candidate is also an important factor considered in the selection process. This includes the candidate's academic performance in school and college, as well as any professional certifications and degrees. Overall, while CAT score is an important factor, it is just one of the components considered in the selection process for IIMs. Candidates are evaluated on multiple parameters, and the final selection is based on a combination of factors such as CAT score, academic record, work experience, What, GD and PI performance.

Q:   I appeared for CAT exam in the second slot. Will my result be declared on the same day as that of the first slot?

A:

Yes, the CAT results for all the exam slots are announced on the same day. In 2022, the exam was conducted in three slots. The results of all the three slots were announced on the same day, I. e. December 21, 2022. In CAT 2023 too, the results of all three slots were declared on the same day. The slot name will be mentioned on the CAT scorecard. The link to download the scorecard for all the slots will be same. Candidates will be required to log into their CAT accounts and download the scorecard from student dashboard. The CAT result is declared in the first week of January but for the last two years, it has been declared in December. If the CAT convening IIM for 2024 follows the same trend, then the CAT 2024 result can also be released in December instead of January.

How is CAT Percentile Calculated?

CAT percentile is basically the rank of a candidate against rest of the candidates. For CAT percentile calculation, first of all, every test taker's raw scores are calculated as per the marking scheme. Once the raw scores are determined, they are normalised to arrive at scaled CAT score. Then the CAT percentile is calculated from the scaled CAT score.

Calculation of CAT percentile includes three steps. Check below the steps of CAT 2024 result calculation:

  1. Each candidate is given marks as per number of correct and incorrect attempts,
  2. Total score calculated by adding +3 for every correct attempt and deducting -1 for every incorrect attempt.
  3. Thereafter, these section-wise and overall scores (raw scores) are normalised to arrive at a scaled CAT score.
  4. The normalised scores are converted into percentiles which are reported in the CAT scorecards.

Q:   What is the admission process for MBA in IIMs? What is their CAT cutoff?

A:
Academic credentials, professional experience, performance on the Common Admission Test (CAT), and results on subsequent rounds of the selection process, such as the Written Ability Test (What), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview, are all necessary to be admitted to Indian Institutes of Management (Iims) for an MBA (PI). The steps to applying for admission to Iims are as follows: 1. Review the prerequisites: A applicant must hold a Bachelor's degree with at least 50% of the required marks, or an equivalent CGPA, from an accredited university or institution in order to apply for admission to an IIM. The minimal requirement for candidates in the reserved category is 45%. Candidates must also take the CAT exam and achieve the specified minimum percentile in order to be considered for admission to IIMs. 2. CAT Exam: Sign up and show up for the CAT exam that the IIMs are hosting. Every year, the exam is typically held in November or December. 3. Candidates are shortlisted for the next phases of selection, which typically comprise the Writing Ability Test (What), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI), based on their CAT percentile (PI). 4. Final selection: The candidate's performance in the CAT exam, the What/GD/PI rounds, their academic credentials, and their work experience all play a role in the final decision. Every year, based on the exam's level of difficulty and the number of applicants, the percentile cutoff for general category candidates varies. For general category applicants applying to IIMs, the cutoff percentile for the CAT is often between 97 and 98 percentile. Therefore, depending on the aforementioned criteria, the cutoff may be greater or lower. It is crucial to remember that, although the CAT score is a crucial selection criterion, IIMS also prioritise other criteria like academic standing, professional experience, and performance in future rounds of selection. To increase their chances of being admitted to IIMs aspirants should concentrate on preparing well for both the CAT exam and the subsequent rounds of selection.

Q:   What is the difference between CAT score and CAT percentile?

A:

CAT score is the total marks a candidate receives out of the maximum marks, calculated by subtracting the marks of incorrect answers from the marks of correct answers. For every correct answer, +3 is given to the candidates, for every incorrect -1 is deducted from the overall score. Apart from this, a candidate's rank is calculated by normalizing the scores of all candidates and placing them on a common scale based on the difficulty and attempts of the candidates. It is important to understand the difference between CAT score and CAT percentile because IIMs and all MBA colleges in India select candidates on the basis of their CAT and other MBA related exam percentiles and not score.

The CAT percentile is referred to as the rank of a candidate against the rest of the test takers. The percentile indicates the total percentage of candidates who scored less than or equal to a particular candidate in CAT.

Suppose,1,000 people take an exam and you bag the top rank, which means 999 candidates scored less than you. Then your CAT percentile will be 999/1000*100 = 99.9.

Thumbs Up IconUpvote Thumbs Down Icon

Q:   How is the CAT score and percentile calculated?

A:
As there are many confusions in percentage and percentile. So, percentage is a ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. Whereas, percentile is dependent on the highest marks. It is a measured by using the statistics indicating the value below which a given percentage of observations of candidates fall. Talking about how the CAT exam percentile is calculated, so assuming that 2,00,000 people appeared for CAT exam in a particular year. The net score of everyone is calculated, and all test-takers are sorted in descending order as per their marks in CAT. Assuming your rank is 1500. So, in this case, your percentile score will be: Total No. of Candidates-your rank Therefore 200000-1500=198500 (198500/200000)x100 = 99.25 percentile. And if there are three decimals in the answer like 99.258, so it will be rounded to 99.3. So, like this, the percentile of CAT exam and similar exams are calculated.

What is CAT Normalisation Process?

CAT exam is conducted in three slots and the questions of every session are unique. Since, every test paper has different set of questions, it is quite possible that one CAT session is tougher than another. To ensure that no candidate has any advantage or disadvantage over another due to difference in question paper set, CAT authorities follow a normalisation process where the marks of every test taker are scaled to bring it on the same plane. Parameters taken into consideration during CAT normalisation process are:

  • Highest score

  • Lowest score

  • Mean score

  • Median score

  • Top 10 percentiles

  • Lowest 10 percentiles

CAT Scaled_Score_Calculation

The CAT 2024 result will be prepared on the basis of normalised score and the CAT percentile will be calculated only after the raw CAT scores are scaled and normalised. The CAT normalisation process is based on GATE scoring process and the calculations are based on statistic equations.

Q:   How much should I score in CAT to get the GD-PI call for MBA(finance)?

A:
