Shiksha: An AIR 8 in AIIMS PG 2020, how are you feeling?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: Very happy, better than what I felt after the announcement of NEET PG result 2020.
Shiksha: How are you celebrating?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: I celebrated success with my family. I even spoke to my friends who had called to congratulate me on my success.
Shiksha: Which college were you allotted through NEET PG 2020?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: I have been allotted General Surgery in Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC)
Shiksha: What are you going to choose, MAMC or AIIMS?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: I haven’t decided yet. Initially my plan was to take up a six-year MCh course in Neurosurgery, but I was advised by a few friends against it. That’s when I made up my mind that I will accept the seat that was allotted to me through NEET PG 2020. I stopped preparing for any other examination and wrote AIIMS PG 2020 only for the sake of experience. Now that I have an AIR 8 in AIIMS PG, I think giving a second thought to the MCh course is required. I will speak to a few of my teachers before I make the final call.
Shiksha: Was the question paper easier this time?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: Yes, it was easier as compared to the previous session. This is mainly due to the fact that AIIMS PG 2020 question paper had questions that were single best answer type only. However, their answers were quite confusing and required a thorough understanding of the subjects. I could complete the paper on time but I would not call it easy. The difficulty level of the paper was moderate.

Shiksha: Where was your exam centre? Did you face any difficulties while travelling to the exam centre?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: My exam centre was in Jaipur. It was around 30 km from my house and I had to drive to the centre. Jaipur no longer has travel restrictions, therefore, I reached the exam centre comfortably.
Shiksha: Were you scared of getting infected with COVID-19 on the exam day?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: No, not really. Every candidate in the exam centre was a doctor, someone who knows how to protect themselves and others from getting infected. Also, the authorities made sure that those who showed the slightest of symptoms or those who were coming from home quarantine were seated in separate rooms. I could see that the security personnel were more worried as compared to the students.
Shiksha: There was a lot of protest against the exam being conducted on June 11, what is your take on this?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: I would not like to make a generalised statement here. But I agree that it was not completely safe. Even if a single person sitting next to you was infected, they could infect you and others around you. Though everyone is aware of the social distancing guidelines, it becomes difficult to follow them when you meet someone at the exam centre.
Shiksha: How did you prepare for AIIMS PG 2020?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: I believe that to ace any examination you must be thorough with your concepts. My belief became stronger when I managed to secure the eighth position in AIIMS PG 2020. After I qualified for NEET PG 2020, I almost gave up on the idea of appearing for any other examination. Hence, I was not actively preparing for AIIMS PG 2020. Even after a gap of five months, I could secure decent marks in AIIMS PG. And this is why I feel that conceptual clarity is something that will ensure that you succeed in any examination.
Shiksha: Was this your first attempt at AIIMS PG exam?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: Yes, this was my first attempt.
Shiksha: Any suggestions for the future AIIMS PG aspirants?
Dr Shiv Kumar Sharma: Concepts, focus on them. As I mentioned earlier, I have experienced it myself. Scoring good marks in any examination requires a good hold on all your subjects. Focus on understanding the subject rather than mugging it up.
