The National Exit Test (NeXT) proposed by the National Medical Commission is set to replace the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET PG).
As per a social media post, the National Medical Commission (NMC) is planning to conduct the National Exit Test (NeXT) for final year MBBS students from 2023, though no official announcement has been made in this regard so far.

The NeXT exam was proposed by the NMC as a part of a bill passed in 2019. The exam will be a common eligibility and entrance test for awarding licence for practising medicine and surgery to students who have completed MBBS studies. Also, the exam is likely to serve as an entrance test for admission to PG medical degree programmes, replacing NEET PG and FMGE exams.
NeXT will be an online exam and the question paper will be based on the syllabus of undergraduate medical programmes. The NeXT question paper will consist of multiple choice questions-type questions.
The social media post read, “With regard to implementation of NeXT, Chairperson, NMC apprised that broad modalities of the NeXT exam had been worked out. The exam would be held in two steps – Step 1 and Step 2. The exam would be held in 2023.”
NEET PG 2021 will be held on September 11 at designated centres across the country. Earlier the exam, scheduled for April 18, was postponed for at least four months. NEET PG is conducted for providing admissions to various MD (Doctor of Medicine)/ MS (Master of Surgery) and PG Diploma courses across the country. The National Board of Examinations (NBE) conducts the exam once a year in computer-based mode. The scores are also used for taking admissions into postgraduate MBBS DNB courses.
