Uniform Motion
The uniform motion can be defined as the motion of a particular object which travels in a straight line with the constant velocity as it moves and covers the distance to reach a destination irrespective of the time taken. The illustration of the uniform motion in a distance-time graph can be seen below:
The motion of an object will be consistent or constant if an object is in rectilinear motion, in this case, the acceleration of an object will be zero.
Examples of Uniform Motion
The examples of the uniform motion are as follows:
- Let us say that the car’s speed is 20 m/s which means that the car covers 20 meters in one second. The speed of the car is constant for every second.
- Another example of uniform motion is the movement of the blades of a ceiling fan
- The blades of a turbine and windmills also move in a uniform motion.
Non- uniform Motion
The non-uniform motion of an object can be defined as the motion of an object which does not travel in a straight line but has a different speed every second and does not cover the same distance, irrespective of the time taken. The illustration of the non-uniform in a distance-time graph is below:
The motion of an object will not be consistent or constant in non-uniform motion, if an object is in rectilinear motion, and in this case, the acceleration of an object will not be zero.
Examples of Non – uniform Motion
The examples of the non-uniform motion are listed as follows:
- Let us take an example to understand the non – uniform motion, a car covers 20 meters in the first second and 15 in the next, and again 10 in the next and 20 in the next seconds. It shows the inconsistent speed of the car.
- Another example would be the motion of a train.

Illustrated Examples
Example 1) Illustrate the uniform motion in a distance-time graph.
Answer –
Example 2) Illustrate the non – uniform motion in a distance-time graph.
Answer –
Example 3) Write an example of non-uniform motion.
Answer- The example of a non-uniform motion includes the motion of a train because it moves at a variable speed and distance.
