Faizan Ahmed, a third-year BTech student from Assam, whose semi-decomposed body was found in his hostel room on October 14.

Parents of Faizan Ahmed, a third-year BTech student from Assam, whose semi-decomposed body was found in his hostel room on October 14., have moved the Calcutta High Court demanding a probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Hearing likely on Thursday

Selim Ahmed, father of Faizan, alleged that his son was murdered and therefore a probe by CID or a SIT is required to find out the truth. He has filed a petition before the single bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha. The bench is likely to hear the matter on Thursday. “The truth surrounding the death of my son must come out. He did not take his life. We feel that he was murdered. We have prayed for a CID or SIT probe into his death,” Ahmed said.

Alumni of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur have started a signature campaign demanding justice for Faizan Ahmed. An open-house discussion was also held between students and IIT Kharagpur Director VK Tewari, wherein the students argued that the institute has witnessed five suicides in the past three years but the authorities have not done anything to address their mental health issues. They demanded immediate resignation of the Director for his failure in handling “lapses” that occurred following the incident.

Mother writes to Education Minister

The mother of Faizan has also written a letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alleging that his son did not commit suicide, rather he was murdered. A copy of the letter has also been sent to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who had earlier requested his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee to carry out a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of Faizan, who belongs to Tinsukia in Assam.

On October 14, the partially decomposed body of Faizan, a third-year mechanical engineering student, was found in his hostel room. His parents filed a case with the local police in Kharagpur in Paschim Medinipur district demanding an investigation into the incident. Following the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requesting her intervention for a thorough investigation into the death of the student.
